Note:

Whereever you buying from make sure add a combo drive, if you plan to use your own DVDRW/COMBO it will fit into the slot but, there are 2 pieces of bracket requred to hold the drive and it does not come with barebones, You will not able to buy just the brackets because there is no such SKU for it, the SKU will be for the Combo/DVDRW, so if you want to buy just the brackets you'll end up paying for the combo drive.

im having a hard time seeing where the HDD slides in from. its installed in the 'business' part of the mobo thats shown in the pictures, but where? by the side do you somehow mean the actual side of the notebook? im guessing not. i dunno, im having troubule seeing where it fits in and how it would be oriented..im slow.

It is on the left side (if LCD is facing you) in front of the optical drive. It is very easy to install.

Very good point Ken! I wish I knew that before ordering. It stays in there pretty well without bracket but still there is nothing securing it. I really have no idea why this is not included if Intel is allowing it to be sold only as a barebones. I would also like to point out something to you folks that are contemplating buying parts. There is another significant reason to buy at least the barebones, CPU, and optical drive from one of these resellers: their support. Eddie and Ken Lee (and I'm sure rjtech) offer great support and if you have issues you are dealing with them instead of Intel or a big vendor. In hind site I think I should have spent the extra $75 for the barebones, cpu, and dvd burner at one of those resellers. I imagine that If I would have told Eddie or Ken that I had an optical drive they might have let me buy without optical and throw in the brackets. You can always buy hard drive and ram somewhere else and save a bit of money.

agreed

I agree. I am definately going to buy from one of those two because ive had positive experiences with their support without even buying anything yet. I like the personal idea behind asus retailers because you deal directly with 'real' people as opposed to the robots at the big companies, and guys like eddie and ken just make you wanna buy from them cause they are very cool about support. I think im going to wait for the nice screen on the Z model and i want bluetooth anyway, but im going to get my own 7200 rpm and my own ram (definately corsair 667). Im sold on it, so now its just a matter of time till that darn z96j comes out...

Hi, maybe a bit off topic, but does anybody know if it's possible to install the ASUS internal bluetooth module in the s96j?

If it's possible, I might just get this instead of waiting for the z96j.

Thanks

I know Eddie at Geared2play offers a internal bluetooth option for about $50 more.

Hey Hyperluminous,
Any word on how the 6-cell battery performs with different power4gear configurations? you said you got 2 hours with max brightness, etc. but have you had a chance to stretch it out and see how long you can get?

Does anybody know the model # of the dvd-DL drive in this unit?
Mine says TSSTcorp cd/dvdw TS-L632C

I haven't installed the power adjusting software. I really only installed the essential drivers because I'm going to need every ounce of performance I can get for my multitrack sequencing.

Technically you could put any of a number of drives in this. I'm assuming resellers are sticking to the Intel Matrix though.

Ken told me they were Quanta drives. In any case, while obviously still the loudest part of the notebook, this multi-drive is loads quieter than the one that comes in the Dell E1705 for sure.

its my understanding that the x1600 in the s96j is underclocked to meet asus' temperature and battery life requirements.

does that mean it will overclock a bit? of course i'd keep an eye on temps and only do it when im gaming (i.e. plugged in)... but its nice to have that possibility
post #56 of 208
I have not had much luck overclocking mine but results may vary. I can only push mine to 490/425 before getting artifacts. I also used AC5 instead of thermal compound that came on the GPU and CPU heatsinks. I imagine that overclocking would improve if the fan was more aggressive. Once there is a way to control fan I would suspect better results.

Interesting, as I've read that X1600 in the MSI 1039 is stock 450/450, whereas the S96j mem wont even get that high overclocked (in this particular notebook).

Some people get 4000 in 3dmark05, while others only 3700 or so. This isnt much worse than the MSI 1039 probabily, who might get 4300-4400 tops. The thing is, this laptop will run much cooler and sells for much less $$. Not to mentium Intel Core Duo vs AMD Turion.

BURRRRNN AMD

Im pretty sure it can handle every game out there at a decent graphic setting, even stuff like Oblivion. I've played Oblivion on machines that get ~ 4500 in 3dmark05 and they play Oblivion pretty decent on like 1024x768
