Downloading CS:S right now and will hopefully get some play time in tonight and leave my impressions.

Will also run a Cakewalk benchmark and report how this system stacks up to others.

Still looking for a utility to monitor X1600 temps.

--------Edit---------

Resolved the error by installing the UAA driver

-------Edit 2--------

CS:S, as expected, ran like hot maple syrup. What I was looking at this time around though was the response time and the brightness and color saturation of the screen and I was very impressed. Ghosting is minimal enough that it's imperceptible if you're into the game. Compared to a high end desktop LCD, the colors are a little washed out, but brightness is absolutly sufficient even for murky games like CS:S.

You seem to have experience with the E1705 and this laptop (obviously).. I currently have the E1705, but am very interested in this Asus. Whats the major differences between these 2... ie. what are the pro's and con's for each one?

Cons: I had the UWXGA+ screen on the E1705 and could never get it bright enough(my main complaint). I also wasn't happy with the DVD playback as the ghosting on the Dell screen was slightly more perceptible than the Asus. DVD-RW drive in the E1705, as you know, sounds like a hurricane and will make your whole desk shake. Not much of a difference in 3DMark and the X1600 uses less power. Lower res means fewer pixels to draw at native res which means more frames per second in many cases. The footprint is a little smaller. The text on the UWXGA+ at normal font size and dpi settings was just too small and any other setting made it look less crisp. I have 20/15 vision, so that's not the problem.....I just like being able to quickly read things at a glance and from varying distances and positions.

Pros: E1705 comes with Direct Media which is sweet. The hinge was stiffer on the Dell. I was expecting the Asus to feel a lot smaller, but it doesn't feel that much smaller. The touchpad and touchpad drivers were very good on the Dell for things like scrolling. The touchpad buttons made no noise. They offer you a sweet deal on the extended warranty after you buy it, so you've got 4 years of worry-free useage.

I may have just kept it, but I got several stacking coupons and the resale on it was more than I paid when I sold it due to the 7800Go being discontinued at the time, so I couldn't resist. I suspect the non-UWXGA+ screen might have suited me better.

What ultimately sold me on the Asus was being able to save money by reuing my old OS and memory and being able to hand select every component that went into my notebook. It fluctuates, but Asus motherboards have also generally been the best overall boards for systems I've built and I wanted something that would last me a long time as one of the main reasons I'm moving to the notebook is to get myself away from constantly upgrading my home computer.

It's not a night and day difference, but after selling it, there were enough reasons for me to consider something else instead. If you're happy with your notebook, this won't make you any happier.

Service Manual

The original reviewer mentioned that he had no instructions on how to put the notebook together, and he was pretty much going by guess work. So I figured I'd post a link to the ASUS service manual for this notebook, which explains how to disassemble and reassemble the computer and details the components in it.

Service Manual

Considering the location I don't know how long that link will last.

Interestingly, it shows an internal bluetooth module in the S96J and how to install it. I'm considering buying this computer and I'd like to know what part that module is and where I can buy it.

Holy smokes! Nice find! Seriously, that manual is pure gold.

I just saved it and if it disappears will be able to email it to anybody asking.

No bluetooth?

The S96J doesn't have Blutooth? I remember seeing an option for Bluetooth on the Gentech site.

Bluetooth at Gentech

Gentech has an option for a USB bluetooth adapter, but I do not see an internal one.

Geared2play offers an internal option, but he wants $89 for it. I don't see that happening.

I'm wondering if the bluetooth module is the same one that will be in the Z96J, and if it will be possible to purchase once that comes out.

Intel has announced to extend the warranty of VBI notebooks for 2 years.

If it's the same you will be able to puchase one at Asus store and install it yourself just like AuroraS did.

Hell, if you check the bottom of the S96J it even says Z96J in at least one place. That manual you found clearly shows how to remove/install the internal Bluetooth and if G2P can do it so can we. But, man, it looks like you'll need to remove everything down to the motherboard to install it. I'm glad I have no use for it.

It's not that the internal Bluetooth is necessary, but I think a wireless headset and mouse would be nice. I'd rather have the antenna tucked away inside the case then sticking out the side and taking up a USB port. Maybe even two if the dongle is big since those ports are pretty tight.

I can spend a couple of hours taking the thing apart and putting it back together, I have lots of tiny screwdrivers.

Of course I could just wait until the Z96J is out, but who knows when that'll be. Plus I'm doubtful that I want a higher resolution on such a small screen, or that a low power card like the x1600 can take advantage of it when playing games. Also, I'm cheap.

15-15.4" is fairly standard for notebook screen size. Are you used to a desktop screen or a 17" notebook?

And the x1600 isn't the absolute best video card out there, but it IS the best for this form factor.
So if the S96J is basicly a Z96J with a lower res screen, can one put a higher res
screen into the S96J at a later date.

The reason I don't just want to wait for a Z96J is that I really don't want a 1680x1050
Glossy anyway. What I really want is a 1440x900 Matte (like a Macbook Pro screen).
I like matte better AND 1440x900 is a better gaming match to the x1600 than
1680x1050.

I figure maybe it is possible that an Intel CBB 15.4" panel at 1440x900 Matte may
eventually become available.
i guess my rationale for the z96j is that i DO want bluetooth and i would like higher res than wxga, and the included bag would be nice too since i will need one anyway. after doing all that to the s96j upgraded will probably be way more expensive than the z96j..
high res would be nice for windows navigating stuff, matlab programming, internet, etc. but for gaming i agree that wsxga+ is a bit to much for x1600, however, my question is what is wrong with just running at a lower resolution for gaming?
Yeah, for gaming I could just set the res at a non-native 1280x800, but I'd also
prefer matte for programming.

The similar Compal HEL81 looks good for linux (nv 7600 instead of ati x1600),
but I don't know what screens its non-CBB variants will have.

If u r screen is native at WSXGA+ any other resolution except that will not look as crispy and clear. Going all the way down to WXGA will look really really bad.
Hey there, im really interested in this Asus s96j, and i wanted to know how well it performs in games. Right now my X700 is not really a powerful performer, that is why i wanted to ask if someone here with an Asus s96j could tell me its performance in games like Counter Strike Source, Fear, Battlefield 2 etc etc with Frames per second or something.

Right now, for example, i can play Css at 1024 res, with settings on high, and play fluidly. however, in certain maps and mods, like the zombie mod, my card struggles to keep up and i see a severe drop in framerate, to unplayable levels.

i also seem to notice some sort of overheating issue, because i see a performance hit after playing for a little while. this performance hit only comes for a few seconds and then frames go up again. i dont know if its the X700 or the Turion that is having the issue.

And lastly, i saw this laptop and thought to buy it from Geared2play or powernotebooks. the difference i spotted was that, Powernotebooks offered the option of using Arctic Silver 5 thermal compound, so i thought it would be better to get it from them as i dont know how to do it myself and ad AS5

does geared2play also use AS5 when ordering configured??

Thanks in advance to everyone that can help me.
Honestly, Arctic Silver 5 isn't really a fantastic improvement over Intel's standard thermal goop. If you ask Eddie to use AS5, he would most likely be willing to, but he would probably tell you it's not really necessary.

Ryxeki, The X1600 will be a very significant upgrade to the 64mb version of the X700. Unfortunately the 64mb version of the X700 is really crippled by the lower memory. The X1600 should be about 3 - 4 times faster than the X700 64mb. I believe that the X700 64mb scores about 1,000 - 1,200 in 3dmark05 while the X1600 scores 3,800 - 4,000.

I'm playing FEAR, HL2, and Quake 4 at mostly maximum settings and it is really smooth. The cooling on the S96j is fantastic.

I imagine that a lot depends on how long you have had the 4402 and if you can afford an upgrade.

Thanks everyone for your response, im looking forward to getting this laptop!! i cant wait.
