Just got my Insprion 6400 Duo Core machine, I absolutely love it. Just a suggestion for all.... DO A FRESH INSTALL OF WINDOWS!!

The system was so slow I could not handle it at startup..All the McAfee and other junk slows down the system. I didn't bother doing the uninstall programs options and I ran the restore disc, installed the drivers... installed ATI Omega drivers... and this thing is blazing fast.. I am just running the media driect fix was we speak.. more impressions later!!

I also got 2 Laptop cases for some reason hehe.. and I wasn't charged for either

And all this time I was under the impression that Australians spoke English. But I guess they speak in unreadable Internet shorthand. I don't know, I guess it could be a drunk post.

The reinstall disks won't add all the bloatware. At least my system came up clean when I reinstalled this weekend using the Dell Windows XP MCE disk and downloaded drivers.

Actually my system came out a little too clean. Dell didn't send PowerDVD with the disks so I can't play a DVD without booting to Media Direct. I'll have to pester Dell for some more disks.

It's up to you whether you want to reinstall Windows to clean your system. There is a risk of taking a perfectly working machine, though bloated, and screwing it up with a bad install. That shouldn't be much of a risk if you know what you're doing, but make sure you have the correct drivers before you start. Dell sometimes sends the wrong driver disk, they did with my E1505.

You know what's weird is the 30 minutes they take with the reinstallation MCE disk.. what the heck is it installing? Did anyone else notice this? I can't figure out what extra they added other than the ESPN thing that's on my desktop.

a tip - i used nLite to customize my windows XP installation just the way i want it, and the first thing i do once i copy all the files to my hard drive is delete the $OEM$ directory. it contains the extra two pieces of garbage that dell includes on the DVD (also removing the "PLEASE WAIT" screen), as well as a bunch of useless videos that eat up a ton of space (i wanna say 1.9 gigs or so). using nlite, you can integrate drivers, hotfixes, remove programs you don't want, setup unattended install if you like, all kinds of good options to play with. i gathered together the 50 or so hotfixes as well as the latest drivers and made myself a custom XP MCE disc (CD, even) that eliminates the need for a lot of post-install tasks and downloads. i highly recommend checking it out for those that have some kind of idea about what they're doing.

It is installing the Windows XP MCE SP2 rollup. Several folks have unknowningly canceled the install at this point. It is NOT Dell 'bloatware'... fwiw Mark

if you do the fresh install using the dell recovery. it'll load the junk back on again huh? or can you deselect it? i have MCE cd but its not 'legit' cd and i dont want my sister to go thru the hassle's of doing updates.

nah, it doesn't install any of that stuff, i also though that to, as with my first computer lnog time ago, it was HP, and we had a system recovery disk that would automatically install all those blaotware progs. but yea, wat i done was put in the widows cd dell shipped with the ntoebook, installed windows. and then u put in the drivers n utilities cd once u isntalled windows, and extract the drivers u need onto the HDD, and install

If you mean the Dell Restore function [Ctrl+F11], then yes... it will be just as it was when delivered to inlcude all the installed applications/'features'. It cannot be 'deselected' as you say. If you do a Dell Restore, just be aware it will delete ANY files you have installed since you first received the computer. Mark

It's probably because he doesn't have a codec to handle the video.... You'd need something like Intervideo's Codec for it to work....
