acer 1642WLMI overheating

hi all, first time poster

I'm pretty new to this laptop game, and ive got an acer 1642 wlmi thing, its only 2 month old and already its giving me problems, started the other night, just shutting down randomly, no errors, no messages, just off and it would attepmt to reboot but not get anywhere ... this to me looks like its over heating as it would eventually come back on after an hour so. however it has been ok since last night.

so ive been having a look at the temperatures on it today and using everest monitoring tool the temp seems to sit arround 50 deg c idle and up to 60-65 when i run hot CPU test on it.

does this seem right, i thought it was a bit high for a centrino???

edit --- oops forgot to say that its a M740 CPU at 1.73GHz --- edit

any advice greatly appreciated

Undervolt young grasshopper...

download rmclock, and use that to slowly decrease the voltage of ur cpu untill the OS becomes unstable. Then take that voltage, and up it a tad or 2 just to be sure ur above the minimum voltage it takes to run ur computer.

That should lower ur cpu temps a lot. If not, then u got cooling problems and u should check to make sure ur fans and vents are free of dust.

yeah i know underclocking is an option, but its only a few months old, so it should be able to work perfectly well at full speed, it was fine for the first few months then it just started playing funny buggers the other day.

anyone got a similar set up CPU ect ... what kinda temps are others getting ???

My mistake, I meant to say undervolt...

So that means ur still running at full speed, just less voltage, which will reduce heat. And seeing as how u were fine before, Im guessing ur vents are clogged and causing overheating.

i am either getting this laptop, or the 3613, this has sort of put me off....
Should i still get it? is this a one off problem? or what?

Sandman112-

My Travelmate 4010 ran ,on the average,at 50c when I bought it,since undervolting it appx 6 months ago,it runs between 34-36c ,and has NEVER given me a BSOD.
CPU intensive stuff will bring it up to 48c,and the fan comes on and does its job,but other than that,it stays around 35c .
The fan does come on for a second at startup, but that's pretty much the only time I hear it.
Not the same model as yours, but it's a Pentium M/1.6Ghz ,and apparently they run a bit toasty at default voltages.
.700v idle and .988v full load seem to work just fine on this thing.
You should give rmclock a try,IMO.
If you still run too hot, then I'd say something is seriously wrong with your machine.

I don't know anything about undervolting, but this is my 5672 voltage. Do you know how low to undervolt it with NHC?

Also, by OS becomes unstable, do you mean you can't access the settings to put them back to normal?

I'm just afraid I won't be able to boot if I change it.

Playing Sim City 4 last night the CPU and HD went to 60 degs.

edit to add: it looks like NHC doesn't have a lower setting than 6x 0.9500V

If you can point me in the direction of temp. monitoring software, I will tell you what mine is running. It stays on 8 hours a day and I have had it onlya month, but I have had no problems yet(knock on wood)!!

baines, hanks for the link, that software is sweet.

anyway,

I get around 40c idle and around 50-55 under heavy load i.e. Photoshop cs2 and firefox running in the background
