If you want to support surround sound, get a Soundblaster PCMCIA sound card.

My machine is coming in today.

Latitude vs Inspiron question

Ronin,
Thanks for the thorough review.

It's really helping me get closer to making a decision on which laptop I want to purchase.

I already have a business laptop provided by my company, I want a personal laptop as well and hence the conundrum I'm in now.

With that in mind, I'm debating whether to go for the Inspiron 640M over the Latidtude D620.

Did you make this type of consideration before your purchase? Why did (or why would) you go for the D620 over the 640M?

The 640M wasn't out yet when I ordered the D620, but I would have gotten the D620 anyway due to the superior build materials, security options, dedicated graphics, and it looks better. I dislike the silver with white trim look of the 640M. Also the D620 has a higher resolution screen without the TrueLife reflective glare screen. Some people love TrueLife, but it's difficult to work with it in areas with varying light environments.

I liked the build of the D620, the spillproof keyboard, smaller footprint and thinner size. Additionally there is a dual pointer (pointing stick and mousepad) and I wasn't interested in multimedia more than abusability of the exterior. The 3 year versus 1 year warranty and better customer service was the clincher.

My choices were the 710 m, IBM T60 and the D620. It came down to the 710 and D620 for price and finally the duo core was the deciding factor.

All I can say is WOW. I am glad I am returning my Intel with GMA 950 for the NVIDIA. The screen is brighter and more parameters for adjusting the screen are available. The viewing angle subjectively looks better.

I ran a hardware check for games on www.systemrequirementslab.com and it recognizes the video card as a NVDIA Quadra NVS 110 (Geforce Go 7300) with 256 MB RAM with 3 D acceleration and pixel shader.

Any info you can provide in better drivers then dells standard? Would it make sense to try and find some Go 7300 drivers that are optimized for gaming and that card?

I'm basically looking at a way to turn the performance of the quadro with the help of drivers to get the max out of my video card. And yes I know the quadro is not made for gaming, but it can game.

I don't game...yet. Looking at the Microsoft website, it meets requirements of games that interest me: EA sports and Sims 2. Beyond that I don't see myself playing anything else ( I wasn't a fan of Freeware version of Doom or Wolfenstein when I was in college a long time ago...It gave me a headache).

I don't know of any modifications with drivers. I have searched around without success to 'ramp up' performance. I am just happy the screen is noticeably brighter and vivid without the glossy nature of 'brightview' or 'truelife' etc.

Thanks for the thoughts. The only thing I miss out on is the built in card reader which is convenient but not critical...

However now I'm drifting towards the Acer Aspire 5562 which is the same form factor, but with an ATI x1400 card.

Guess I'm not as close as I thought to making a decision on what to buy!

And there is an ASUS A3J coming out, 14'1" with a X1600.

You have two (actually, I have two options), use the external card reader which is rare to infrequent, or to buy a PCMCIA card adapter.

I am interested to know if it plays EA Sports games (ie Tiger Woods, Madden, and NhL), Godfather and Sims 2.
