Latitude D620 with Quadro Review - Page 5

Well, I recieved our first D620 w/ Quadro for work the other day and I am extremely dissapointed in the display. The matte display is very grainy even at the native 1440x900 resolution and appears out of focus and the colors are downright dull.

In comparision to the display on my 3 year old C640 the D620 looks like crap. I've seen similiar reports on other boards and I have to say that as it stands I won't be getting myself a D620.

I beg to differ.

To each his own. My experience is what it is and I won't be sinking any of my own $ into a D620. Not until I can determine if this is a couple of isolated cases.

One of the other cases: http://forums.us.dell.com/supportfor...ssage.id=21944

Sounds like the video drivers were installed incorrectly or not installed at all. My screen is very good.

Titanium you seemed to have good luck with your display.....I'm expecting to get by d620 tomorrow (with the quadro card) and was wondering what settings you fiddled with to improve your display's appearance? Did you install new video drivers or anything like that? Any tips would be appreciated......thanks.

Also, what brand is your screen? I'd like to check and see if mine is the same.

I used the following settings:
Brightness +50%
Digital Vibrance +40%
Contrast +46%
Image sharpness +0%
Gamma +9%

Hope that helps. Digital vibrance is what makes this screen competitive with the Glossy screens in my opinion.

Battery life is sacrificed for screen brightness/quality.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'll definitely try those settings. What brand is your screen? I'd like to see if mine is the same......

My display is wonderful, no problems at all. Sure, it's not TrueLife, but I didn't want a glossy mirror display.

I'll check out some of the settings on the work model tomorrow. I'm certainly hoping that it is a driver/settings issue.

Good luck Millsy, I hope you don't get a bad impression of the D620 from bad settings or a bad monitor!

Ronin and Titanium.......do you mind checking who manufactured your screen (Samsung, LG, etc.?)

How is that done?

Go to the device manager, go to the monitor tab, go to details tab; and it will say after the display/"XXXXX". The XXXXX is the maker of your screen. Examples include SEC (Samsung), AUO, LG, etc.

Under default monitor properties -> details

Hmmm.......I know for a fact that Powerstrip will tell you -- available at http://downloads.vnunet.com/download...trip/_231.html -- It's a pretty cool program....

You should be able to see who made your screen without it though, I'll figure it out tomorrow when my d620 gets here........

Samsung SEC4457.

thanks for checking.........I hope I get the Samsung too.

so samsung is the good screen? my d620 wxga+ w/ quadro just shipped today so i'll post up a review of the screen when it arrives..

Well.....I got my D620 today and it's got a LG screen, not the Samsung. I can definitely see what people are talking about when the say the screen looks "grainy", especially on white backgrounds. That being said, it doesn't bother me too much.

Also, I wanted to ask you guys with the good displays (Samsung) if you had to pump up the display brightness all the way to get your screen bright enough. I'm not talking about the nvidia settings, just the normal display properties. I had to put it on the maximum setting for it to be acceptable. Please let me know.......

Not necessarily. I can go down two levels have the brightness equivalent to the brightest I had on the Dell D620 with the Intel GMA 950. Now, I remember that the prior configuration had an LG screen.

That sucks that there are potentially different manufacturers since there is such a disparity in screen quality.
