older thinkpad help

i came here looking for some help for my OLD ibm thinkpad. i have a 600E (yea, thats right, i'm still using a pentium 2 laptop unfortunatly, and until i get my macbook) anyway, i want to make it last, however it died on me and i don't know why, and i figured somebody here may be able to help me. i was having some issues with my power cord so it ended up getting sliced and diced and re-soldered together (its a long story, don't ask). long story short, i ended up buying a universal kensington charger that doesn't work for me. is it possible that my internal power supply is shot, or do i just need a regular ibm charger?

if i just need an ibm charger, does anybody happen to have an extra one laying around that will work for me? since it is such an old laptop and all

sorry to bump, but does anybody have any ideas? i really would like to get this thing back online and squeeze as much life out of it as possible as i don't know when i'll be able to afford a new computer for college

The 600s can use the standard IBM 56 and 72 Watt adapters. Is there any chance that someone nearby can loan you one for test? If not, they are relatively cheap online and ebay. It can use any of the 16V adapters.

What voltage does the Kensington output? If it's 16V, then try removing the battery and starting the system. A shorted battery can give no POST symptoms.

well, i lost all the parts to the kensington adapter, but i did have a non-oem charger that is supposed to be compatible. it has an input of 100-240v and an output of 16v, which is right where it should be. i tried starting it up again with and without my primary battery. however, and i just thought of this, but i had a battery in the optical bay installed when i tested so i can remove that and replace with the dvd and test again, and test again also with my 2nd regular battery. i'll do it later though, as i'm busy right now, i'll post an update later though

UPDATE:
i have tried every single combination possible of batteries and drives that i can come up with, and it will not boot. Is is possible that something is shorted out inside the computer?

It's looking more like the planar is bad. If you can pull the CMOS battery and replace it around a minute later, that will force a reset of settings in BIOS. I'd try starting up again after resetting the BIOS, but if no results, then the planar is likely dead. If you can find an inexpensive replacement, it might be worth doing yourself. The changeout is a pain in the tail, but the HW manuals are available online.

do you know any good places for me to get a hardware manual? i have no idea how to get at the cmos battery. if i can get this laptop working, i'll be really grateful as this will likely be my college laptop until i can afford to switch over to my macbook (yea, pathetic isn't it, i'm depending on a p2 for college)

UPDATE:
i managed to figure out that the cmos battery is right there in the ram compartment. so i got that out and i'm about ready to reset it.

Here's one for the 600X;

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/si...id=MIGR-4DGNTQ

yours should be similar. They can also be found by going to www.lenovo .com and in the search box putting "Hardware Maintenance Manual" and the model number. You shouldn't be limited to a PII on that box, it should be able to take a PIII at a more decent speed.

yea, i found a forum specifically for thinkpads, and i'm waiting for my registration to be verified, but i'll post up my issue there too and any possible upgrades to do. right now i'm only running 64 mb ram (under xp pro, i know, pathetic) and i'm going to find a way to upgrade up to 512

also, can you explain what the planar is exactly?

The planar is the main system board.

If I remember right 512MB is not a problem with those systems, but it's been awhile.

o boy that sound like a fun thing to replace. yea, it can support just over 512 according to that thinkpad site i was on before. i did an ebay seach for a thinkpad planar and the only one i found was one for an r540, so ebay may not be the best route to go.

They are going to be hard to find by now and at the prices you are likely to find there will normally be better deals around.
