lithium-ion batteries..NO MEMORY!!!!!

I've seen many posts about how to charge a laptop Lithium-ion batteries here, Many people have the wrong ideas. Lithium-ion batteries differ vastly from Ni-Cad batteries Below are some simple guidlines, these are not just "my opinion" these are recommended by Isidor Buchmann the founder and CEO of Cadex Electronics Inc. Mr. Buchmann has a background in radio communications and has studied the behavior of rechargeable batteries in practical, everyday applications for two decades. http://www.batteryuniversity.com

Avoid frequent full discharges because this puts additional strain on the battery. Several partial discharges with frequent recharges are better for lithium-ion than one deep one. Recharging a partially charged lithium-ion does not cause harm because there is no memory. (In this respect, lithium-ion differs from nickel-based batteries.) Short battery life in a laptop is mainly cause by heat rather than charge / discharge patterns.

Batteries with fuel gauge (laptops) should be calibrated by applying a deliberate full discharge once every 30 charges. Running the pack down in the equipment does this. If ignored, the fuel gauge will become increasingly less accurate and in some cases cut off the device prematurely.

Keep the lithium-ion battery cool. Avoid a hot car. For prolonged storage, keep the battery at a 40% charge level.

Consider removing the battery from a laptop when running on fixed power. (Some laptop manufacturers are concerned about dust and moisture accumulating inside the battery casing.)

Avoid purchasing spare lithium-ion batteries for later use. Observe manufacturing dates. Do not buy old stock, even if sold at clearance prices.

If you have a spare lithium-ion battery, use one to the fullest and keep the other cool by placing it in the refrigerator. Do not freeze the battery. For best results, store the battery at 40% state-of-charge.

Good read, thanks for the info.

thank you HapiROTT,

now i still doubt the posts will stop, because people would rather ask, then search! lazy bums

Yeah I hear you there, But what bothers me more is that some poeple talk out of their a$$ believing that they have to fully discharge and recharge the battery, which is very hard on the battery due to the heat.

Li-Ion and Lithium-Polymer batteries are harder to charge and MUCH more expensive then Nicads and Nickel Metal Hydrides BUT they have a much higher power density then the other types do.

Electric RC planes have really been "taking off" (no pun intended) the last number of years and the results of using LI-polymer batteries in-flight is quite impressive. With Nicads and Ni metal Hydride you can expect perhaps 10-15 minute flights (at a 50% load). You may expect 1 hour flights with Li-polymer. Quite impressive.

If the charging/discharging of the cells (for laptop use) can be refined, you might expect 6-10 hours use out of a single charge.

Cool, I did'nt realize that there were battery operated RC Aircraft.

i think it very silly that all these people worry about batteries to the point of OCD.

its humor i guess. HAHA

It's understandable, batteries are not cheap to replace and not that easy to get a hold of over here either.

Personally I don't do much to take care of my li-ion batteries, I generally get the lifetime I should from them.

exactly my point. you dont do much to take care of it, yet you STILL get about what you should (i didnt realize there was an exact amount of charge cycles that some magic genie th ought up anyways, ya know).

and all these people baby their stuff, yet they get THE SAME amount of cycles, and the same amount of battery life as YOU.

like i said, humorous
