this was probably already covered, but does this card fit in the m170?
search the forums, it has been covered and the answer is yes, but with considerable modifications
post #3 of 12
I remeber there being talk about it but I don't think it has been tried. I thought the only test has been the 7900 in a 9400/e-something-or-other, which was a sucess...

Link?

Last time I checked, it was only in theory and hasn't been proven yet.

wait, so if it works in the M170 does that mean it works in the 9300 too?
no one has tried it in either yet.

hmmm, oh well still a (slim) chance then...

Here are the hurdles to make a 7900GTX/GS fit into a 9300/Gen2/m170:

1) Slightly bending the left heatpipe
2) Chopping off the connector for the hinge cover (power button & led's) and wiring them directly - under the video card
3) Possibly cutting off a keyboard post
4) Hacking an m1710 BIOS to install onto a 9300/Gen2/m170 without freaking out the differences of:

a) ExpressCard vs PCMCIA
b) SmartCard slot vs None
c) MiniCard vs MiniPCI
d) SATA vs IDE (unless you have a 9300S)
e) Centrino Duo vs Centrino (wireless cards and chipsets)
f) Yonah vs Dothan

Those are alot of obstacles that are not worth the effort. It would be better to sell your 9300, buy a 9400, and plug in a 7900GTX. Or just sit on your ass for another year and then get a Merom laptop with a G80 video card.

That part sounds fine to me.

I agree, the 2 options I gave at the bottom seem much better - and cheaper. =)

I bought a 9400. I'll open it a couple days before my 21 day period ends to see if I need to complain or return it for any reason... after that it will sit and wait for a 7900GTX. Got the dual core just for the hell of it... plus the Yonah 2ghz seems to play on par with the 1.7 Banias pinmod, so I'd rather play with the fewest mods possible. And Planetside is a bear on a single CPU system, especially when tabbing out or running TS in the background. It's loads of fun, but poorly coded.

Sounds like the best chance may be if Dell offers a special version of the 7900 for the m170/gen2/9300. Not terribly likely, but possible.

Thanks for the info...
