5660 and RH8.0 Data point

After reading all the comments about weak M9 drivers and having to skip hw detection during the install, I just crossed my fingers and dropped RH8.0 on my new 5660.

It was not only the easiest RH install I've ever had, it was the easiest OS install I've ever had (especially compared to loading M$ stuff on this machine, too). EVERYTHING worked without a hitch - no hanging on the firewire, it detected a Radeon 9000, etc. I had planned to spend all evening dealing with things...but the whole thing took 15? minutes.

As you can imagine, on these machines, RH screams right along. Woohoo!

Drivers ???

Hey great, but i STRONGLY doubts that the graphic drivers will be installed properly. RH 8.0 is really great and improved Glad ya like it. Only thing ya need is a little work on the ATI drivers. I have posted previously how to, let me know if you can't find it.

...I'm sorry if I implied that the drivers were 100% (which I guess I did). Everything DOES work like a charm *except* GL-related things and/or games as far as I can tell. I can get full 1600 resolution, all the colors, no problems at all. It's only when I run something like Maelstrom that I see any problems.

I plan to get the drivers you related to tomorrow.

Meanwhile, I was thinking about something - why so much trouble getting the ATI 9000 drivers when its the card that the Mac and OSX use. [Yeah, OSX <> RH, but it's *nix].

OSX in Proprietary *nix !!!

Well, the answer is very simple. OSX do NOT share they software, at least not their implementation of the ATI drivers on a BSD4.4 lite based Mach kernel that they use. Ati release their drivers, but with the pack, it allows you to build your own module. Mine is a Fglrx module built with gcc 3.2.3, with a P4, hehe, optimised with sse2 instructions .

As well, i would llike you to compare perfs of OSX and Linux on i386 for First Person Shooters and openGL performance. Well, ATI has promised easier and more stable drivers soon...so lets hope. By the way, i posted a kind of walk throught of the kernel install. Hope that helps.....
