Exchange XPS M170,GETTING M1710 for SAME$$$MIX UP!!

omg this has got to be a dream. i got in on the XPS M170 for ~$1400 deal just like everyone else, when i got it the top lid was scratched up. i called to complain about it, and the csr agreed to have another xps m170 with the same specs shipped off via next day shipping. i checked my status the next day after the call, and i saw the replacement as M170 so nothing exciting. this was like a week ago.

today though, i check the status in my account and it shows XPS M1710 SHIPPED!!!! they made a couple changes from my original m170. 2ghz core solo is now 2ghz DUO, 7800gtx to 7900 go, and 120gb hd to 100gb i know the cpu is a definite improvement. the video card, i'm not sure which is faster the 7800gtx of 7900 go. i haven't seen any benchmarks for 7900 go, only 7900 gtx. can anyone comment on which card is faster?? of course the downgrade the harddrive is negative, but if 7900 go is better, then i'll let it slide this time hehe.....or should i call and complain in the decrease of harddrive capacity... well you guys let me know what you guys think i should do in my situation. thanks in advance!

I wouldn't be complaining about that deal!!

The hard drive is not a downgrade. The 100GB is gonna be 7200RPM, the 120 is only 5400RPM. Actually, the one you are getting is more expensive, so if you MUST have the extra space, sell it and buy a new 120GB from newegg, but I wouldn't.

As for the vid cards, from what I have seen it looks like the 7800GTX has a SLIGHT advantage over the 7900GS. But really, it's so small, and at least with this, you have the option to upgrade to a 7900GTX someday, so I wouldn't worry about it.

Consider yourself lucky!!

The 100mb HD is 7200 rpm. Hardly a downgrade as the 120 is 5400rpm.

Lucky DOG.

OK, everyone on "3"

1... 2... and 3... LUCKY B@STD!!!

I'll even take a 80gb/7200rpm over a 120gb/5400 rpm anyday for all that free upgrade. Anyway, that's good news. Enjoy.

i wish i had your kind of luck

i would say why not push it a bit further... they seemed to have 'pushed' the m1710 on you. Say you wanted the m170 for the good graphics card and you know the bench marks on the 7900gs are less than the 7800gtx. Therefore you should have the 7900gtx....Good deal tho but i would definatly have pushed for the gtx...since they gave you know warning by the sounds of it of getting the m1710 i think it should be possible...

You should call Dell immediately and tell them about their screw-up and demand your M170!

I got the same deal. Got in on the M170 deal, replaced with a M1710 for free.

Take it and run dont look back!! Once you get it call them and say you ran benchmarks and your 7800 GTX beat the 7900Gs and they will send you a 7900 GTX 512 I would think but i would not do a thing until you receive it. But you are a lucky man without a doubt!

hahah that is a very good idea, but is the 7900 gs that much slower than 7800gtx? i wouldn't want to completely lie and say the 7800gtx is tons faster than the 7900gs. if i did call, do you think they can in some way make me return or pay the price difference in the m1710? not sure if i should push my luck on an already forturnate situation.

nice, i'll be checking outpost out, as well as other websites. what did you end up doing with the 1gb ram that came with it? if you sold it on ebay, how much did it sell for?
they won't take it back off you because if you do all you do is complain even more.. its their cock up you can only benefit now. I would definatly push for the gtx. The 7900gs isn't miles worse than the 7800gtx but you are still getting a worse graphics card than what you ordered
post #16 of 28
Haven't put them up for sale yet. I am planning to keep at least 1 for backup.

Congrats, nice deal!

I think I will be calling to ask for the 7900GTX. I DID pay for a 7800gtx, I shouldnt be downgraded to the 7900GS.

what was the situation with your laptop? was yours scratched up as well on arrival? i might call after my finals are over, right now i'm just happy to have almost everything upgraded. just read some reviews in this forum that the screen is better as well, along with the cool XPS light on the touchpad.

it is confirmed, just recieved my package today, and it is indeed the black xps m1710. no time to run 3dmark06 because i'm studying for finals. i ran 3dmark06 on the m170 i'll be returning and got 3336 on 2ghz, 1gb ram, 120gb 5400 rpm, and 7800gtx. i didn't do a fresh reformat of os because i knew i'll be returning it. i will update and report the new 3dmark06 score on m1710 on an out of the box system and fresh os install. still debating if i should call about the downgrade from 7800gtx to 7900gs...
