Chembook 2056, won't turn on...

I purchased a Chembook 2056-S about 15 months ago from DiscountLaptops.Com (this laptop was made by ChemUSA, I think it is basically a Compal 56).

Two days ago, my wife was working on the laptop at our kitchen table. She walked away, and while in the other room heard the low battery signal beeping. She was not able to plug the power adapter in, and the laptop ran out of battery power and turned itself off.

A few hours later, she plugged the power adapter in and let the battery charge for a few hours. But, when she tried to turn the laptop on, there was no response. When the power button is pushed, you can hear the fan come on. You can also hear the DVD drive make a few sounds. I may be able to hear the hard drive, but just for a split second. It is not being accessed. After a few initial sounds, the fan stays on and the power light stays on. I do not hear the hard drive being accessed at all. The laptop is totally dead. The internal wireless light does not come on. The screen stays blank.

I've taken the battery out. Tried to charge the battery again. Tried turning the laptop on with the power adapter plugged in. Tried with the power adapter not plugged in. But, I get no response. The screen is completely blank. I've tried hitting the Function & F5 keys just in case the laptop was set into some CRT/projector mode. But that did not work.

Please help.

Thanks very much in advance.

There is a tiny jumper under one of the RAM slots. You need to remove the center door on the bottom of the laptop in order to expose the RAM. From there, remove the RAM sticks and look for something that says J4 or J5. Make sure your disconnected from all power sources (AC and battery), then touch a flathead screwdriver on the 2 contacts. This will reset your CMOS and hopefully get your baby breathing again.

PS: I may be able to find the service manual and a picture of the jumper later on if you need it. Let me know...

Thanks!

Thanks ViolatorX. I'll try that. I know my way around a desktop, but have never opened up a laptop. Do you know if there is any risk of me messing up my warranty? I live just a few miles from the ChemUSA headquarters. So, I can easily drop off the laptop at lunchtime.

If everything is unplugged and you just lightly tap the jumper, there really isn't any danger os screwing it up. And the jumper itself is very easily accessible. All you need to do is unscrew 2 screws on the middle panel underneath and you have access to the memory bay. From there you just push out the metal clips on the side of the memory modules and the jumper is right there.

It sounds scary, but it really is a no brainer.

If you really feel skiddish about doing something like this and you live so close to Chem, then you can try themif you wish.
