Default Thinkpad x60/x60s lcd cover and other build quality questions

Thread Starter
Currently I have an x31 in my possession and I'm pretty much test driving it to get an idea of how the other models in the thinkpad line fare. I'm loving the keyboard, it's pretty much how everyone said it would be. The little nubbin I can get used to. It's the lcd screen cover that I'm a little worried about. When I put a little pressure on the screen cover there is some distortion on the lcd screen. I was wondering if this is just an isolated incident. As far as the rest of the unit, it seems solid. No creaks or other weird sounds eminating from the chassis. Can anyone vouch for the lcd screen cover? I wish there was a titanium cover for the x60. That would just be too sexy. Thanks all!

Is a "Titanium" cover basically a polycarbonate or hard plastic lens over the LCD? Cause the college I'm going to has a laptop program and they provide a Thinkpad R50 and I'm worried about whether it'll be built any better than my Powerbook G3. I really don't like the way it's so flimsy-like.

a titanium cover is a titanium sheet of metal with the black paint applied.

the plastic is on the R series...

On the T43 that I have, if you push hard enough, you'll get ripples...

There's nothing flimsy about any of the Thinkpads. Although the R's are made with ABS plastic, they still have a rigid frame.

Misunderstanding.

Sorry Nooorm. I think you misunderstood. Maybe I wasn't clear in my question.
What I meant to say was "My Powerbook has a flimsy-feeling LCD screen that makes ripples and strange visual effects when I push on it, so I hope my new IBM is made better."
Sorry about that. I definitely wasn't bashing IBMs. I can't wait to pick it up, I'm going to campus for Orientation on Thursday this week. (Yea!!)
Cheers!!

No misunderstanding. I was trying to assure you that the R's won't do what you're describing happens with your powerbook. The R's aren't as rigid as a T...and on my T42p, if I really press on the back, you can see a little effect on the LCD, but you reeeeeeeally have to press hard. And there's almost no twist in the frame.

Other people in my office use R's and they are happy with them. I suspect you will be too.

When you push on the back of the screen, you get ripples? I don't think that should be happening. I certainly don't get that with my t43. If these guys say you can, I must not be pushing hard enough, but I'm pushing pretty darn hard.

When I played around with a thinkpad with a titanium cover in office depot, I honestly thought it felt flimsier than the regular screen. Maybe I got the wrong impression, but I wasn't really impressed.

Yeah, X series lcds are built pretty tough, you shouldnt be getting any ripple with light even moderate pressure.
The T series are the strongest, it takes heavy pressure on mine to cause any noticable effect. One thing to remember about Thinkpads, 14" have Magnisium Alloy lcd covers, 15" models have either ABS or Carbon Fiber. So 14" are stronger.

Yeah, i played with a Z series and they felt "cheaper" to me too. You can put a thin sheet of titanium on paper, it will still be flimsy. The titanium would have to be pretty thick to be rigid. I think the titanium cover on a Z is more for show and marketing than it is for real word application.

How could I have forgotten?

My fiance, a woman of not exactly small proportion, STEPPED ON HER X30 not even a month after I gave it to her.

No damage to the screen. No damage at all, as far as I knew at the time. I later found out that the plastic bezel around the LCD was cracked...but the titanium LCD cover protected the screen, which is what matters most.
