Re: updating bios

I was thinking of upgrading my Athlon 1 Ghz processor in my desktop to a Athlon xp 2200. My desktop is a compaq and I will probably need to upgrade my bios. The thing is I can find any bios upgrades that say they are for an athlon xp. Does anybody know where to find bios like this? Also will I have to upgrade to DDR Ram from PC 133. Thanks for any responses. Everybody has been great here!
Question, are you certain that your motherboard can take an Athlon XP processor and DDR ram? Alot or older motherboards have limited upgrade capabilities ( by older, I mean that is often why they didn't come with those things in the first place... ). Does your Compaq's manual contain information that these upgrades are possible, or have you researched the possibility on the HP/Compaq website? You say that you can't find an Athlon XP bios upgrade, well if it is not on the HP/Compaq website it likely doesn't exist ( most likely because it isn't supported by the motherboard ). Also, DDR memory requires different circuitry and interface slots than PC133 SDRAM - so if the slots for it are not already available on the motherboard that you have then you are out of luck. What I usually do when I want to upgrade my desktop beyond its current capabilities is buy everything that I can't transplant from one computer to another from one of my local computer shops ( a barebones PC - but often you need to buy so much that you might as well get an entirely new system ) and go from there...
Sometimes it is no only cheaper and easier to start from scratch, but also a necessity.
