heat related question for the 8600

If you leave it for long periods of time just sitting on the bed I would recomend putting a book underneath so that it has plenty of space for the vents, better safe than sorry....

Definetly try not to ever put it on top of soft things like clothing, bed, pillows especially

Actually if you look at it from the bottom you can see the slots and the fan inside where it draws air from the bottom and blows it out the back and top slots on the case.

Have you considered a laptop cooler?

Hi Guys,
Just wondering if anyone with the i8600/Geforce5650go combo are having any problems with the heat generated by the Gpu.

The image isnt the best example of the situation i face, but the gist of it is:
When running graphic intensive applications (ok, games then, currently Battlefield Vietnam ) the gpu overheats.

The problem is that the temperature rises to 100°C rapidly, then it cuts back (so avoid catching fire). At this point I crash my helicopter in BfV.

I may be able to solve this problem by using omega or equivalent drivers and underclocking the processor, but if at all possible I would like the Gpu replaced with one that generates less heat.
It seems strange that the factory settings are not only set too high, but they have also disabled the over(under)clocking menu, disabling my ability to fix the problem using the release drivers.

The heat has also caused the left side of the case to warp and in one place crack! Evidence again that the laptop is running a little too hot.

Does anyone have any comments?
Similar problems with the same Gpu?
Might I be able to get a replacement Gpu?

heatwise the Radeon 9600 would not help you here. You might want to consider underclocking as a temp solution and call in dell for a replacement card

I've read quite a few other posts regarding heat issues in the Ati 9600 gpu, but none regarding the 5650.
Maybe I'll get lucky and they haven't got any 5650's in stock. None of the newer i8600's are built with 5650 gpus. The 9600 outperforms the 5650.....
I wonder if it is the actual chip or if maybe something else isn't functioning correctly, with any luck I'll find out shortly.

Well this is fun.
Called Dell Norway to report the problem.

As the issue is related to gaming, it is not supported by Dell! ie. s***w you.

The tech was very appologetic, and agreed that the 8600 should cope, but it was out of his hands. He reccomended that I complain, especially since the i8600 was marketed as the ultimate gaming pc (or something along those lines).

I'm about to formulate a letter to the Dell Complaints department. Does anyone have any experience in dealing with them? A tip or two about what to say or not to say may help me out.

In retrospect, if I had not mentioned the word "game" I may have had more success.

That is pretty bad Tony. Extrapolating, what would happen if you permanently damaged one of your parts while gaming. Does gaming void your pcs warranty??? Is it possible that the GPU fan is not working properly on your unit? From reviews I have read, (esp. anandtech) the ATI should put out less heat than the 5650.

I remember reading in a separate thread about the latest rev of the 9600 that a couple of guys rang dell saying that the fan on the GPU was not running and were sent the new cards. Perhaps if you ring up with a specific problem such as this they will be happier to replace the faulty part? Also I believe that the later revs of the 9600 have slightly better thermal characterisitcs. Hope this helps.

Sorry mate, just saw you were running the NVidia. Not sure if this has a built in GPU fan, but if it does, the same problem (ie. noisy/malfunctioning fan) should get you a new 'un)

The 5650 has a GPU fan, and it is running (unfortunately, as it would be a clean cut case of swapping the part.)
As I mentioned above I'm using fangui to monitor the gpu temperature, and to force both fans to run at max.

I really HATE having to write complaints to faceless departments like this, it's all to easy for them to stamp "rejected" on it, without giving any reason for it.

BTW. Does anyone have a electronic copy on the original blurb about the i8600 (pre 9100/XPS)

Been eyeing the swell Levenger Scooter for some time now to enhance my couch tater tasks.

The CPU isn't the only thing to worry about. The RAM is hotter then the CPU most times, and it's smack dab in the middle.

I'm new here and I may ask all the dumb, wrong questions, so I'll try to read more that write. In any case -- if I am NOT a gamer (but am an engineering student), should I be worried about the heat coming out the ATI 9600? Will it negatively affect my GPU's life?

I had previously looked at the mod you refer to, but discarded it since it primarily dealt with the ati card.

Your experience has given me the confidence to give it a try, will let you know how things turned out.

Btw. about the temperatures I posted. They probably go higher, but FanGui doesn't report above 100ºC ...
