Best image quality for video playback on e1705?

Hey guys, I've had my e1705 for a couple months now and I'm really loving this system after having so much trouble with my last one. I'm interested in putting the 7800 and dual core to work for some image processing so that I may get some extremely high quality video playback on a television (I have a normal and an hd depending on which room of the house i'm in).

Right now I'm just using vlc player, so I was wondering what I would need (preferably free utilities) to get a great picture out of this laptop and on to the tv screen. I will be using both DVD's and video clips such as divx and mpeg4. In addition to what drivers/players/etc. I need, I was wondering what settings I need to tweak and how? I have a truelife screen running at maximum resolution, so I'm not sure if that needs to be changed as well as contrast/brightness/sharpness or if that is taken care of by the codec.

Sorry for the beginner questions, I've tried researching this but I mostly find info pertaining to specific desktop HTPC builds instead of laptops.

Thanks in advance!

you might be better off talking to people who have HTPCs. They could tell you the apps you'd need. Have you tried avsforum.com?

here is a link to thier htpc forum: linky

using ffdshow as a mpeg4 decoder and post-processor is a good start, and i would also recommend the avsforum for info. Just be warned, the ffdshow thread is a unmanagable monster. unfortunately ffdshow is not multithreaded yet so it won't take advantage of our Duos.

I never got tear free playback on VLC, but I was playing .flv files and the tearing may be specific to that format. VLC is well respected so I was surprised to have that problem

for video playback i would use Media Player Classic (free) or Zoomplayer (current versions not free). Zoomplayer has more options (lots!) and looks nice but both get the job done. I feel MPC is easier to setup. I would download "Quicktime Alternative" and "Real Alternative" and install them. This will give you the ability to playback most quicktime and real files without their inherent spyware/naggging/etc and install the latest Media Player Classic as well.

Good luck.

I would also suggest if you are using the 7800go that you get a hold of the NvDVD codec to make use of some of the onboard chip features like purevideo that the card supports. Also supports HD WMV playback I believe. since I dont know what video you are running this is just a guess.

To get the best quality I also suggest you get a dvi-d to hdmi cable if you have a hdmi compatible tv there is a huge quality difference compared to the s-video out

Everytime I have tried to use the PureVideo codec it shifts the image upwards by several hundred pixels, am I the only person with this issue? I've even tried it on other PCs and I have the same issue.

Thanks for all the help guys, I'll check out avsforums for help setting up ffdshow and WMC then see how that does for me.

Unfortunately I don't think our HD has a dvi input since it's a couple years old, but I'll be sure to check just in case.

I'll check into the purevideo decoder as well since I have a 7800.

Thanks again!
