Why!

my cpu runs overclocked at 3.2ghz at 25c from 3.0ghz, and im pretty sure thats nowhere near hot, anyway when i try to overclock anywhere higher than this my comp boots up to the windows loading menu, and a blue screen flashes and it restarts, i didn't change any voltages or anything. I have a p4 ht enabled northwood socket 478, and an asus p4c800-e deluxe, and yesterday i just bought a zalman cnps9500, when i put it on though it did move around a bit from installation, may that have messed up the arctic silver 5, cause i only got 3 celcius lower. But i dont get why I cant overclock anymore than 200mhz when im at 25c, do i need to make the voltage higher?

Firstly, as5 takes a while to take affect. As far as the overclocking is concerned, it could be number of things that make your system unstable. Your ram might not be able to run with the fsb cranked up. I had an P4S800 for a while and was limited to a 400mhz overclock because the board didn't feature an agp lock. When you turn up the fsb, a lot of things are cranked up too. Since it doesn't appear to be a heat issue, I would suggest downclocking your ram if you can or getting some higher performing ram. I have some geil ram that works pretty well with a 600mhz overclock. I do however have to lower my memory speeds to find stability. Don't worry though, raising the fsb raises the memory speed as well so it will eventually get back up to a normal speed. Good luck.

P.S. you should probably get cpu=z if you have not already. It is a very useful tool. Just google it.

yeah, alot of it has to do with what swifty said. When you change the fsb of the cpu, the clocks for the ram and agp go up as well. If it is indeed your ram, you have to underclock it before you oc the chip, just make sure you keep it a 1:1 ratio after the oc is in place if you can. What kind of ram is it anyways?

also, i can get my 2.8 prescott 478 up to 3.6 on stock voltages, so you should deffinatley be able to hit higher than me.

let us know what you have for ram tho, as it's deffinatley not a heat issue.

its a pc3200 ddr, its a corsair value select and yea im being told its ram on every forum but how do i underclock, for my asus p4c800-e deluxe for the ram i can only choose auto, and the next selection is 266mhz, the rest are higher so thats out of the question so. HOW DO I UNDERCLOCK PLEASE, its 1:1 now so what do i do! (its oced at 3.1) from 3.0ghz lol

The way i did it in my bios was under CPU advanced configuration I believe. I am not familiar with your bios so I would say play around with it. The way it is displayed in my bios it with a popup menu that gives the choices of 200, 166, and 133 as speeds for the ram. Be careful though, unstable ram makes it really hard to use a computer as I am sure you've noticed. Remember f10 for optimal defaults if something goes way screwy. In my limited experience with an ASUS motherboard, I found that overclocking wasn't much of an option because of the limitations of the bios. I haven't been able to find anything out about your board so I am assuming it is older. Socket 478 maybe? My old board was limited to a 400mhz overclock because of the agp lock thing, and was an older ASUS board from 2003 I believe. A friend of mine has it now and ran into the same wall I did. Let us know what happens and good luck.

These enthusiasts and their overclocking!! Why don't they go out there and overclock some p*ssy instead??

shouldn't that be a "?" instead of "!"? You are asking a question no

alright but seriously how do i downclock with the asus p4c800-e deluxe

I thought you were trying to overclock? What are you trying to downclock? I don't know your bios or motherboard limitations so I can't help you there. I told you as much as can as far as hardware limitations are concerned and how to get around them. Please be a little more specific as to what you are trying to underclock. Also, a good site for learning stuff about overclocking is the tom's hardware guide community. That's where I got my start. Good luck.

im trying to downclock the ram

I've honestly never used an asus mobo. Well, i did buy one once, it was doa....

Just look around the part of the bios that has anything pertaining to ram on it. If the option to underclock your ram is available to you, it will be there.

Will a bios update probably allow the overclocking features to be enhanced because I have the bios from 2-3 years ago

also i recorded the startup with my camera to see what the blue screen said, and it said that a problem occurred and windows shut down to prevent any damage from occuring, and it said if this is the first time restart and take these steps to prevent in and it goes on with devices and drive space im stumped.

0x8056c2*5 replace 6 with anything it was illegable sorry

A bios update probably won't give you anymore overclocking features. Bios updates usually update what kinds of cpus a motherboard can take not change any bios settings. So no, a bios update isn't necessarily going to give you those options. What are you overclocking for anyway? If you are really interested in overclocking, I would suggest getting a board from DFI. I hear they are really overclockable and that their community is really good too.
