Problems with Fresh Install of Windows on dv8000t

I am new to this forum, and this is my first post. Seems like a great place with a lot of helpful people. Anyways, maybe some of you can help me out.

I just received my HP dv8000t with MCE2005 yesterday. I spent the evening making recovery DVDs and backing up the C:\SWSETUP folder to DVD. I decided to wipe the hard drive clean and reinstall Windows (I ordered the $10 HP DVD) without all the HP trial software. Before wiping the hard drive, I also made a floppy disk with SATA drivers on my Sony USB floppy drive. At the appropriate time during the Windows setup, I pressed F6 to install the SATA drivers. I selected the Intel 82801GBM SATA AHCI driver. The Windows setup continued and I deleted the partitions and created 2 new ones. After that, I chose the NTFS quick format for drive C:. After the format, the "copying files" screen came up, and then...

Insert the disk labeled:

Intel Matrix Storage Manager driver

into drive A:

Press ENTER when ready.

I left the floppy drive connected the entire time and never removed the disk. I also tried a couple different floppy disks, but the result was the same. I also tried the SATA floppy creater from the Intel website, but to no avail.

I thought maybe the problem was MCE2005 (I have only ever used XP Pro), but I used my XP Pro cd, and I still get the same message. I have installed Windows XP many, many times, but I am stumped with this problem. I would appreciate any help from you guys. Thanks in advance.

I found the source of this problem. For some reason, my Sony USB floppy drive would not run the disk to install the SATA drivers. I was able to select them from the disk after hitting F6, but just before Windows begins installing, it copies the driver to the hard drive. This is where the Sony floppy drive would not run. After switching it out with an HP floppy drive, the drivers loaded and everything worked fine.

The Sony floppy drive works fine every other time I use it. I have successfully transferred many files to/from it. I am not sure if I need to send the Sony floppy drive back, because it works fine for everything else.

Here is a link to the drive that is giving me problems...

Wahoo24jc,

"Welcome aboard" fellow dv8000t owner

First of all... Thanks for taking the time to post on doing a format, fresh install.

(Hopefully you've seen my posts and links to info on the subject and they were of help to you.:-)

So you've installed Windows many times... boy you sound like me:-)

So the HP is only "seeing" a HP usb floppy disc during the SATA driver install? ( I would assume it works fine in Windows, right?--- How nice that it didn't work during the SATA driver install, that you had to use a HP floppy drive..LOL!)

WOW.... Hope it sees my TDK when I do the same.

One way to get around to using an external floppy is to use nlite to make a custom made XP install disc.

PS: Please post any addtional observations you may have...

For example, is the $10 install disc you can buy from HP (LOL) truely "junk" free and does it have the needed drivers, etc?.... In other words if someone was to wipe their hd clean BEFORE backing up the C:\SwSetup folder, would they be ok, or in trouble? (I think I already know the answer, just trying to get a confimation)

BTW: Did you totally wipe the hd clean? Deleting the QuickPlay and restore partition?

Does your QuickPlay still work? http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=141817

What's up bro, I am having the SAME EXACT problem, the damn Matrix storage driver.

I'm using a Q-Stor USB Floppy drive that I just bought at Fry's.

This is really ridiculous how much trouble it is giving us to install Windows.

Anyone else find a way to solve the Intel Matrix Storage Driver problem?
I wanted to take a second to thank wahoo24jc for this thread.

I went back to Fry's and returned the Q-Stor external USB floppy, and bought two more just to make sure I got one that worked.

I first tried the Iomega external USB floppy, but that didn't work either.

Then I tried the Memorex external USB floppy drive, and VOILA! It worked. I've never been happier to see a Windows installation screen.

Thanks to wahoo, I would have never thought using another floppy drive would have been the problem, and I was searching around all through the internet.

FOR USERS LOOKING TO REFORMAT AND INSTALL WINDOWS XP:

MAKE SURE TO BACKUP YOUR \SWSETUP\ FOLDER on your C:\ drive.

Make sure you leave SATA Native Support ENABLED in the BIOS, do not disable.

Known working external USB drives to read the SATA drivers are HP's and Memorex's. Sony, Iomega, and Q-Stor, don't seem to work. There might be more USB drives that work, but those are the only two I know of right now.

If you're confused on what to do, follow the steps of the first post made by wahoo, except using a HP or Memorex USB drive (or one that you find works).

Alternatively, you can see nlite method of installing Windows XP, but I prefer this way.

For those wondering, the notebook is running UNBELIEVABLY fast (no joke,, nothing compared to the original installation that comes with the notebook.) And this is coming from someone who uninstalled all the appropriate trialware and crap that came with it.

Once you finish installing Windows, it will be missing quite a few drivers. Install the drivers in this order from HP's website or your SWSETUP folder.

1. nVidia display driver (\swsetup\video\setup.exe)
2. intel pro network adapter (\swsetup\network\e100b325.inf)
3. intel wireless adapter (optional) (\swsetup\WLAN2\Sinstall.exe)
2. intel's chipset drivers (\swsetup\chipset) *or* intel's website for latest.
3. intel's matrix storage driver (intel's website for latest)
4. microsoft universal audio architecture bus driver (\swsetup\1UAA\Disk1\setup.exe)
5. conextant high definition audio drivers (\swsetup\audio\setup.exe)
6. conextent high definition modem drivers (\swsetup\modem\setup.exe)
7. texas instruments media card driver (hp's website)
8. synaptics touch pad driver (\swsetup\touchpad\setup.exe)
9. quick launch buttons (optional)

And there you have it, that should get you up and running with a nice, clean XP installation.

I hope this post/thread helps people who have been having trouble with installing XP or looking forward to reformating and installing.

Ahh, so nice and clean =)

Enjoy.

I have the same problem, but I would like to know the nlite solution, because I can't get external floopy drive at the moment.

Thanks

Could anyone tell me if I actually NEED an external FDD drive? Cause I aint got time nor cash to buy one and was wondering if I could reinstall without it. Please help!
thats strange when i formatted both mine and my girlfriends dv8000t's using the Home edition CD from HP, i didnt have to instal any 3rd party sata drivers, because there were some already on that cd. Not sure why its giving you guys a problem.

Could any expert say whether there are ANY SATA drivers on Win XP disc AT ALL?

Not natively on a standard Windows XP disc. Usually you need an external FDD to load the SATA drivers. You can also try slipstreaming the RAID drivers onto a CD using this guide. I've never tried it myself, and from what I've read it can be real daunting. Just Google it to get an idea of how involved it is.

Hi, just wondering if the intel wireless adapter driver is for the wireless lan? Also, what is the matrix storage driver & microsoft universal audio architecture bus driver for?
Yeah, the Wireless adapter is for the Wireless lan.

The Matrix Storage driver is for your RAID/AHCI, it's a must.

and the Microsoft Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) is needed for your sound card, and modem. So make sure you install that first.

Here is the link to the Intel site for your INF update (chipset) and the Matrix Storage drivers:

http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scri...4&submit=Go%21

You will need the first two links. Make sure you install the INF update utility first than the Matrix drivers.

Good luck.

I had a problem with fresh install Windows & like I thought the problem was with USB floopy drive, but no...the problem was with the BIOS settings.
Then you connect the USB floopy drive, set the SATA Native to Disable & then install the the Windows. Everything will go smooth...

I've just received my new notebook - the dv5201tx and I'm going to do a fresh install of Windows XP Pro. I would like to know, are all the drivers in the SWSETUP folder available on the HP website? If it is, I rather download those drivers as they're compressed and are much easier to store on my external hard drive. Also, do I need a floppy drive to install the SATA drivers because I do not have one at all.

Don't count on ALL the drivers to be on HP's site. Backup your C:\\SwSetup folder... Burn it to DVD... If you're worried about disc space... WINRAR them up... Do you need a external floppy to install the SATA drivers? YES, unless you received the OS install disc from HP, or you've made you own custom XP install disc with the drivers slipstreamed in. Search my previous posts for details.

*Sigh* I really hate it when they make it as hard as this to just format a notebook. Do you have a link to the HP support where they showed you how to format a notebook?

No, don't do that, I did that too, and when I tried to enable the SATA Native Support back, it would Blue Screen me when I tried to get back into Windows.

It also wouldn't let me install the Intel Matrix Storage drivers.

You should really reformat and do it again with SATA enabled, or else you're not taking advantage of it.

I thought the way you did it was the solution too, but then I realized the SATA problem.

Not offhand... I'd have to go to HP site and look around just like you. I've made numeous posts on the subject and if you read thru some of them you should be able to do it. Formating a drive is easy.... when you put in the XP disc and reboot it will go into setup. Press F6 if you need to install any SATA drivers, point it to the "floppy" they are on. Or make your own custom install disc using nlite, or via the method in the below link. One thing... are you using a HP supplied OS disc?... If not you need to research SATA.... Intergrating (slipstreaming) the SATA drivers into your XP install. http://www.maximumpc.com/2005/01/how_to_slipstre.html

Every desktop Ive ever build has has SATA drives and Ive never had to install sata drivers before installing windows. I thought you only needed them if you were creating a RAID array. Are the dual drives setup in raid? Or are hp notebooks just a little different making you install sata drivers during the xp install. Are those the only drivers you have to load before booting into windows and installing the other drivers?

Im ordering from Costco and personally dont like XP MCE and wanted to install pro. I wont be getting it from hp so I wont be getting the $10 disk hp provides.

Does xp pro come bundled with sata drivers or are notebooks just different then desktops. Im not as familiar with troubleshooting desktops as I am with notebooks

It's not a raid array. Been a few weeks? since I installed but the XP installs I had were asking for the SATA drivers.

HP XP disc did not.

Could be due to the "age" on my install discs... as you know new controlers come out all the time. Notebook controlers are custom built for the unit.

If you download the drivers from HP and extract them it gives about 4 differant versions, if you read the readme file it mentioned RAID... then it mentions that RAID has been disabled on the "mobile" controllers used.
