As the thread ask what are the advantages of a core duo and should I wait another month or 2 for it? Thanks for any help and opinoins.

one core.

no seriously its just another core. so in specific applications the load can be balanced between those 2 cores and you can get better performance. at the moment you will not see any significant gain in performance in games but its pretty nice to have for the future.

Some applications are written that do the balancing between the core and multi tasking performance will be pretty much like the P4.

I have an old P4 3ghz (northwood core) and my roommate has an Athlon 64 3700+

We both have a gig of ram and comparable hard drives. I have a radeon x850XT PE and he has the 7800GS OC. I think our systems are pretty close as far as components go.

I can switch tasks (like out of ram hog games) instantly and his system takes forever. I multitask better, even if his cpu is supposedly faster with games.

You'd see the same sort of improvement over a single core system (as mine has over a single thread cpu)

I'll give you an example where CoreDuo helps TODAY: I exported a report from a website and although it had an .xls extension indicating that it was an Excel file, it was actually in an HTML format. The report was 18mb, and when I opened it on my 1.78GHz Pentium M it consumed the machine for 15 minutes. I could not do anything else while Excel reformated it for further use. Opening it on a T2300 (1.66GHz) machine, one CPU was pegged, but the machine remained completely responsive and I was able to continue working without having to go take a break.
