HP nc6000 can support Dothan!

Thread Starter
I was researching this model and I decided to check the user service manual for any processor info and they have a 1.8 GHz Pentium M processor listed as a replacement part . That means that not only is the processor socketed (and upgradable), it supports Dothan (probably to 2.0 GHz too).

yeah I downloaded the service manual too and saw that. It will probably be upgradeable with the first generation DOTHAN until Intel decides to change the pin number and configuration. Though upgrading the laptop to a Dothan CPU will be very expensive !!!! The current Centrino CPU's are $$$$

Since this is an open topic on the nc6000 ... anyone know how "one" gets a 10% discount coupon from HP? I registered a long time ago w/HP Sml Business hoping to get one - but nada! I really want to buy the nw8000, but would like to pay much less.

Search the web, you can also check some web forums on the HP computers. I have been to the zx7000 forum and have seen the coupon code many times.

I am interested in the HP nc6000 as well. Hopefully an upgrade to Dothan will be supported in the current production model. Page 5-33 of the service manual even documents the removal of the socketed processor. I wonder when Dothan is released just how long it will take for HP to make it an option on the nc6000 (1.7GHz still isn't available).

As for the 10% discount, I believe those codes only apply to HPshopping.com (non-business purchases). The nc6000 and nc/nw8000 are only available thru their business channel.

Ah-ha! So HP doesn't offer coupons for the business line ... thanks for the explanation. I've searched many forums but could only find coupons valid for the home office systems. Was going to purchase online - but I did call sales, and it appears if you go thru sales, they will give an 8% discount which is cool with me.

Guys,

This might be a dumb question, but is Dothan only about processor clock- the 1.8GHz? or is it a new archeticture from the current 1.6GHz Pentium-M available in the market?

Many thanks

Dothan is clocked at 1.8+ GHz, but slower variants will be available. Most importantly, it has 2MB L2 cache (vs Banias' 1MB) and is manufactured on a new 90nm "strained silicon" process. The CPU reportedly consumes 21 watts at full power (vs 24.5W for Banias). Pricing for the 1.8 Dothan should be in line with the 1.7 Pentium-M.

Thanks for the heads up ~88! I will call HP directly for the 8% discount. Btw, did you have to ask for it or is the discount applied automatically?

Discount is NOT automatic - gotta ask for it. I asked them if I could get a better price ordering from them over the phone via ordering online - and they told me they could give me a better price. I then asked if they can offer me a discount, and they said yes 8%. And ... I called 4 different times and was told from 4 reps they could give me an 8% discount and that 8% was the max. So it pretty much looks to be a standard procedure.
