HEHEHE like the title said, finally i made the jump, Selling my "old" troublesome Acer Ferrari 4005WLMi, and get myself, a brand New Apple MacBookPro 2,0Ghz With 2G of RAM.

Well, actually i did'nt intend to upgrade to 2G RAM, but since the shop is having an offer , so I get free upgrade to 2G RAM and free Microsoft Office 2004 :P

Actually this is my second MBP, the first one i have a bad build quality, there's gap between the casing and after using about 2 hours or so, the gap is getting bigger, and also the machine runs very hot. Go back to the store and get it replaced, so far so good, no gap in the casing and it did runs quite cool
after 3hour or so, the MBP is just barelly warm.

Anyway this is my first mac ever, i'vee been wanting to try mac from long time ago, but i afraid if i dun like it , then it will be difficult to sell the machine cause mac is not so popular in my country.
and actually i've been looking at the Acer TM8204 , but since i knw that MBP can runs in WinXP, then I said , why not.
i can always use the MBP to runs on WinXP if i dont like the OSX :P

Anyway i got few question to ask mac expert here, :
-Do i Need to reformat the MBP ? cause if i buy a WinXP notebook, normally first thing that i would do is reformat, change to NTFS, partition the HD, install anti virus and Zone Alarm, etc. But i have no idea what to do with my MBP. can any Mac expert tell me ?
-What is the essential softwares for mac ?in WinXP, i'll have MS Office,Zone Alarm,Kapersky Anti zvirus,ACDsee,NERO,etc. What will i need in Mac OSX ???
-Whar is the best mac user forums outthere other than of course this great forum :P

THX, I'll post some review afterwards and i'll also put the pics of it side byside with my old Ferrari :P
thx :P
INSTALLING boot camp right now :P

No need to reformat the MBP.

You don't need any anti-virus/firewall/spyware software for the MBP.

I frequent the following Mac forums:

www.macnn.com
www.mac-forums.com
www.macrumors.com

Hope this helps!

It is not a bad idea. You dont technically need it for windows either, it just aint a bad idea.

Specificly I would reccomend at least having an AV and running a firewall. Mac has a built-in firewall though that you can use for this.

Everything that installs on a Mac requires an administration password. As long as I know what is being installed on my computer, there's hardly a chance that I'm going to be infected with a virus. Anything else that is questionable, will not be downloaded onto my primary drive. Unfortunately, Windows does not operate that way.

Not everything but everything that tries to mess with the system folder.

Right now Anti Virus software for Mac just wastes resources.

another question is that i want to install XP through bootcamp on my MBP, and i'm wondering what partitions will be best for it .
i'm thingking since i have 100G HDD, i want to prtition it like
-20G mac OS
-10G Win XP
-All the rest for data (wil this partition able to be read and write by the 2 operating system?

System Preferences>Sharing>Firewall

I use Safari for everything but if I come across a site that doesn't work well in it I try Firefox.

The only thing with making a data partition is that OS X creates a home folder for you where all of your data is supposed to go. There are ways to move the home folder to another partition but it's not recommended. Personally I'd do 20 for Windows and 80 for OS X as I'd only use Windows for games, really.

As far as readability...Windows can't do anything with HFS, which is the format OS X uses for drives. OS X can READ NTFS, which is the format Windows XP uses, but can't write to it Both systems can read and write to FAT32, but FAT32 is a very inefficient file system.

While Windows is another topic entierly that I only brought up to illustrate the point of you dont HAVE to, an AV program on a mac is not a bad idea. As I said it is a good idea to have one even if you arent running it constantly.

Normally you would be right, any program that tries to change anything in certain areas would require a password. But that is what differentiates between a good well written virus that abuses system flaws so that that is no longer the case, and your typical script kiddie virus that proliferate windows systems.

Being ready in case you need it is HIGHLY suggested, and most SysAdmins on any UNIX based system will probably tell you the same thing, even if they never need to run it, they probably have one in their toolkit they keep up to date as a just in case measure. And requires very little in the way of resources.

Now all that is just dealing with the AV. The Firewall, if you dont run that I cant help you. While the majority of script kiddie viruses cant abuse system holes hackers definitly can. A firewall is availiable and the system resources it takes up is so laughably small its ridiculous.

Just because nothing has happened yet doesnt mean something CANT happen.

Of course some do prefer the ignorance is bliss theory.

I noticed this at the apple store but was wondering if anyone knew why the new MBP's have rubber along the top of the lcd hinge?

It's the antenna.

ot another question though, normally in my previous notebook, i always take out the battery when it connected to AC adapter cause i'm afraid to spoiled the battery, and i use my notebook mostly at home or work, connected to AC a desktop replacement as this is the only computer that i have, but when i tried to connect my MBP to AC without battery, the fan turns up really high, maybe at full speed and the fan noise is very very loud. This only happened if i tale out the battery, if i put back the battery, everything is normal, again, is this normal ?? or my MBP is a faulty ?
and if this is normal, how am i use the MBP >??? just put the battery in there and connect it to AC most of the time ?? cause about 90% of my notebook life is on the desk , connected to AC, the only reason i choose notebook over PC is less cables, and can easilly moved from my home to office, but i seldom use it on the road.

I've never heard about that happening before. It's possible they designed the cooling system around the fact that the battery would be plugged in.

You don't have to take the battery out while plugged in anyway. The battery will die just as quickly if it's in the computer and not being used as it would out of the computer and not being used.

There is one useful piece of software that you can get is a cache cleaning utility for OSX. OSX, Safari, and Firefox all have generous caching of data, so after a long period of use it can be a real annoyance.

Tiger Cache Cleaner:
http://www.northernsoftworks.com/tigercachecleaner.html

This not important, but useful to have. It beats having to go in to each browser and manually clean out the caches.

I have heard from other posters on this forum about the fan issue, but not sure what the solution will be.
