File and Print Sharing Issue on Network

post #1 of 10
Thread Starter
I have 5 sager notebooks running WinXP (1), W2K (1), and W98 (3). Along with my 1 desktop running SBS 2003. Everything is currently running on a wired network through a router. I have never had any serious issues until recently.

My WinXP box has a printer and a folder that was being shared to everyone on the network.

My W2K box has a folder that is being shared.

My SBS 2K3 box handles dns and is a file server.

Router is handling DHCP.

I cannot access my WinXP box from any networked box. (Error MSG: \\WinXP is not accessible.) Cannot Print or access shared folder from network boxes. Can access all other boxes on network from WinXP box, with the exception of my W2K box. (Error MSG: \\W2K is not accessible.) All other boxes can access W2K box without a problem.

All boxes show in Network Neighborhood on all machines. All boxes can access internet.

Nothing was updated or changed before this problem started.

Have run AV, spyware scanner, network scanner (no network problems), etc. Have checked all TCP/IP settings. I can see nothing obvious that would cause this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Forever in the debt of Sagerforums.

Not very fond of DHCP. Have you attempted to bypass at least that variable of this dilemma, and simply hardcode in the IP address at each machine?

I had a similar problem once with machines of different operating system persuasion. I found that installing the netbeui protocol on each machine (most especially any Xp machines, as netbeui is not installed by default) corrected any difficulty. Of course, YMMV as always.

Good luck.

Harrelld,

Did you check to see if it is a firewall issue?

My first thought as well. So I disconnected the WAN and disabled all firewalls.

list more properties.
what ip's are they pulling from the router?
read off the workgroups exactly. 9 times out of 10 with windows networking its an issue with a typo in the workgroup name.
....
wait.
is that server running active directory? if not you do not need DNS and that could be messing you up

IP addresses all look fine:
SBS 2K3 = 10.0.0.2
Win XP = 10.0.0.101
W2K = 10.0.0.115
W98 = 10.0.0.125
W98 = 10.0.0.155
W98 = 10.0.0.195
Router = 10.0.0.1

Domain could not be simpler = HD

I am running AD. I had thought about demoting the server.

It is my home system, so it is not a mission critical problem. It always helps to solve these kind of problems at home before i run into them on the job. 90% of what I know about computers is from doing, the other 10% might have been learned in class.

Diag

Can you run the following from netsh in diagnostics mode and post your info.

show computer /v

(netsh is a command line util just in case you didn't know)

netbios over tcp/ip enabled?
can you ping the xp machine? or you've just used UNC names?
why is the printer installed on the xp machine and not the server?

I know it sounds pissy, but can we please try and keep this kind of thing in the tech support area. The general area is already way overcrowded.
