I just called dell and wanted to see what the price on a 7900GS would be for my E1705.

The part number they are telling me is:

UF804 Go 7900GS 256MB

and the price they gave me was $325.95

Not bad to replace my the x1400.

I shouldn't need the bigger battery or Power Supply ether.

Nice!

Hmm I'm tempted to get the 7900 GS. Does it have any disabled pipelines or is it just a lower clocked 7900 GTX?

Installing the 7800GTX in the 1705/9400 - No go?

I saw the pictures. I have a 9300 and I just bought the 7800GTX off of E-bay. I have the 130w PS and the 9 Cell and I flashed it to XPS Gen2 bios.

I was ready to install the card when that crazy sale happened and I bought a 1705/9400 Dual Core 2ghz, 1gb DDR2, 60gb SATA, DVD-RW, 9cell, 7800 and the UXGA display for $1254 otd.

Now I have a dilema, I can try to get the 7800GTX to work in the new machine or list it back on e-bay (or sell it to one of you fine people) and wait until the 7900GTX comes down in price. The 6800 in the 9300 runs pretty good and I can play BF2 in 1280X960 full detail just fine.

What do you all think? BTW, I will sell the 9300 for a great deal if you know anyone who wants one. I have the 3 year extended on it.

I didn't have to pay restocking fees because I live in California and apparently it's against the law here. I paid to ship it back using UPS ground with insurance and it cost me $30.

Actually I was wrong, I looked up California law and they are allowed to charge a restocking fee. I guess the CSR was mistaken but she said she wouldn't stick a restocking fee on there because of California law...guess she was clueless which is good for me :P

Well, My card came. ...It is not what i ordered
Oh and since it was not what i ordered..they sent me a note that they were not charging me for the card...called it a $325.00 giveaway FSR

WTF is that???????

But it got here on time..And by all accounts it is better then my 1400.
So with that said...i am editing my video review and pics for a 7800 go....;no gtx and arctic ceramique upgrade...got some great pics of machine and workings...Can u believe that even the 7800 go heatpipe and cooler needed to be modded some to fit
I guess i will make a thread with the info and find out where to host the video from...and or if it should leacve uit in short files and class them or make one long blerb?...Any ideas all?

It's called 21-day no questions return policy. After 21 days they can charge you a restocking fee. You were still within 21 days.

No I assumed if people were willing to mod their laptop,
1. They could use a screw driver
2. They new how to go on the Dell site and look at the manual!
http://support.euro.dell.com/support...n/sm/index.htm

But would not bother having a go if your already having trouble!

haha very funny , but anyhow, see i didnt know dell would release their service manual and that there's even actually a link to it! lol most computer manufacturers wouldnt release those manuals because they don't like customers tickering with their laptops then breaking something...

but thanks alot for the info, you rule!

hey also, lol this might be a dumb question, but opening up the case and etc voids the warranty right? (what about just changing the 7800go to 7900gs which fits perfectly, does that void the warranty?)

No worries
Not if your take care, warranty should be ok if on site?, mabe keep your old card to put back in? but if the eng see's the broken metal by the heatsink, will probably void it!

a few more questions if you don't mind,

1. you say wont last long on a 6 cell, so how long is that exactly, and how long will the 7900gtx last on a 9 cell?

2. 130w power supply is it alot bigger than the 90w power supply that came with my laptop?

3. how much will my 7800go sell for?

4. i know the 7900gs is a 15% aprox performance increase vs 7800go do you know how much % increase is the 7900gtx vs 7800go ?

5. i heard that the 7900gs runs cooler than the 7800go, is that true? does that also mean the 7900gs will last longer on battery than the 7800go?

I'm missing something essential...

Where did you get the 7900GTX module in the first place? It's obvious that this module was specifically made for the Inspiron 9400. So, it came from Dell?

Wrong, it doesn't just plug right in. You have to cut away the metal around the left fan vent in order for the left video heatpipe to fit. We're just lucky that the BIOS recognizes the card. Dell may have not cared to lock the card code out of BIOS because they blocked the vent with solid metal instead of removable rubber tabs like they did in the 9300. And also considering the m1710 and M90 share a more similar motherboard revision than that of the 9400 maybe all be things that led Dell to slip up on this one.

Restocking fees really depend on who you talk to when you are on the phone w/ one of their reps. I was told if I return w/in 21 days no fees & no questions asked on the phone-I called twice.

On the other hand, on Dell chat-I was told I will be charged the fee, and that's main reason why I made the call twice to make sure.

Hope this helped.
