HOW-TO: Upgrade your 9400/E1705 with the 512MB 7900 GTX "Photo Guide" - Page 12

I am considering an upgrade for my 1705 to the 7950. Will I need to upgrade to the 9-cell battery as well as the to the 130w power supply?

Thanks,
B.

installed my new 7950GTX, and oced to 675/1568, and my current scores are:

102K aquamark
24K 3dmark03
6109 3dmark06

the only issue im having is that when i try to load any drivers other then the stock dell ones, they install fine, i restart, and it loads windows, but when ever i try to boot into windows it locks up and blue screens, and it lists the cause as NV4_disp.dll....

any ideas?

How are you overclocking using stock Dell drivers? Did you flash the BIOS on you GPU?
i flashed the bios after i tried the laptopvideo2go and Xtreme G-Froce mobile, and one other driver i found, and they all blue screened w/ the NV4_disp.dll error

so i flashed the drivers and did the coolbits reg add/edit and my MAX overclock is 701/1600, but that was putting my temps above 90, the 675/1568 puts them at about 80-82 under full load, 78-80 w/ the laptop cooler.

for almost a 1000 point increase in 3dmark06 and being able to run every game i have @ full settings & 1920x1200 and get usually 100+ fps, the worst FPS im getting is ~40 in Rainbow 6 Vegas. im very satisfied, but i'd be more then glad to squeeze even more power out of this baby.

Check me if I'm wrong here but your display is only supposed to run at 60Hz refresh which is 60 fps so why would you want to take a chance of frying your video card to get performance you are not going to be able to see? BTW I think to fix NV4_disp.dll error you have to move the correct .dll file into the folder that the driver is installed in. There is a specific .dll for your GPU that you have to replace the existing NV4_disp.dll file with. Not positive I'm right about that but I think thats what I did to get them to work. I uninstalled them b/c with out flashing the BIOS on your GPU you cant overclock anyway and I dont want to do that. Also, what program do you use to see how many fps you are getting while you are in a game??

i use an external monitor that can do 1400*900 @ 75hz... so the boost is nice there, and well... E-braggins rights... come on now... who does want those e-braggin rights.

and i use fraps to see my ingame FPS

Because you can turn off Vsync and it may have some tearing here or there but it will run over 60fps, and its not what you see at over 31+fps that your eyes can perceive, its how it feels. A perfect example of exactly why you want the highest frame rates possible, is more for having plenty of overhead during the really complex areas in games where it brings the fps down dramatically.

If we all went by the notion of its not worth it cause you can only perceive around 30FPS visually then you would never be able to play any real games because capping your game at even 60FPS in a game say like Oblivion, means that as soon as you hit the outdoors or really complex effect areas, you would actually drop below the 30FPS which actually gets into choppy land.

I would rather run my game at 125FPS and have it drop to its lowest around 30FPS and have it still be fluid and playable. And 60Hz is higher than we can technically see, my statement on what you can feel pertains to super high frame rates feel more fluid, and some people almost get a sea sick feel above 40-50FPS. =) the way I like it.

I don't have a 7900gtx but I try to run all my single player games around 60 fps (w/o vsync though) and all my multiplayer games (all first person shooters) at either 125 fps...Its not all bragging rights when it comes to fps...in many cases you can run faster, shoot faster, and jump higher with higher fps
post #229 of 349
zzpulp, I'm a bit of a novice at this so I'm not for sure, but I think things like running and jumping are dictated by your CPU and your system RAM. Only the video display is dictated by your GPU unless you put settings real high or dont have enough GPU power and then your CPU resouces are coopted so my point is if you have enough resources to run on full settings at well over 60 fps which is your display refresh rate, why would you risk meltdown for more? Eclypse, I'm not sure what your point is but a display refresh rate of 60Hz means the image on the screen can only be updated 60 times per second so turn v-sync off or whatever else you want to do but your not going to see more than 60fps whether you can physically see it or not. This forum is about E1705s and most all of us have UXGA monitors and run them at 1920 x 1200 and it has a max screen refresh rate of 60Hz. If you have a differnt system or use an external monitor like Luda does then more power to you. My original point was just that if you dont and you arent, then why risk frying your GPU.

does anyone have the part number for the 7950GTX?

The more frames a game can produce per second, the more calculations it can make...hence you run faster, blah, blah...I'm not saying this is true for all game engines but a good bit of engines use this principle. If you don't believe me turn off the frame limiter in gta1...
A player with 125 or 333 fps typically has a large advantage on someone with 30 fps in the games I have played

Awesome, thanks! I just called dell and am able to get it for less than on ebay... I think I will order it in a couple weeks.

Can't wait for the power supply!!
Do I have to flash M90/M1710 system bios on my E1705? Thanks.
There is no hacked m1710 bios...no need for one either...the 9400 can even handle the 7950gtx without a whine
post #237 of 349
Thanks!!
Speaking of power supply - does it matter if we get the 1st generation or the 2nd generation? Also, do we have to replace the battery as well? I usually have my laptop plugged in the wall. Finally where does everyone get their power supply and battery? Those non-Dell brand equivalents are ok?
if you have at least a 9-cell battery you should be fine. as for the power supply, 130W is needed for the 7950GTX
post #240 of 349
I use both a 6-cell and 9-cell battery on my E1705 w/7950GTX & 130W brick, and both work fine. Granted, the 6-cell gets about 1 hour of battery life...
