Im running a 7900GTX with A09. When u boot it, u should at least see the BIOS splash screen, then there will be a delay, and you will need to press F2.

I'm 90% convinced that the card is just bad, but is there something I could be missing? I have the A09 Bios, are any of you running this bios successfully with the 7900gtx? I can put the 7900GS back in and it will fire right back up, any ideas?
I've bought two 7900 GTX's off da bay recently, and both were toasty. The first one had weird line patterns while booting up, but I still oc'd it and it ran great for a week or two, then cratered. The next one booted just fine, ran proggies just fine, and wasn't even unlocked yet. I used ATITOOL to test for errors before even flashing the BIOS and there were artifacts all over the place. Sending that one back too. It seems like there's an expiration date to these whether they've been tweaked or not.

Hey rawr
I think the long term is where you may find the brick will go toast on you.

It really not meant to power the power hungry 79XX GTX cards

I tried my 7950GTX with the 90w brick for a while and wouldnt notice anything unusual until 20 to 40 min into hard gaming (F.E.A.R.) or maybe watching a movie and the brick would short out. I would not even realize it sometimes as it would switch to battery. If I unplugged it and plugged it back in it would reset no problem. I noticed what I was doing to my system though when I got the 130w brick and my 3DMark06 scores went way up.

Dell 9400/E1705: Core 2 Duo T7200 (2.0 Ghz) | 512 MB Go 7950 GTX | 17" WUXGA | 2 GB DDR 2 (667) | 80 GB HD 7.200 RPM | 8x cd/dvd burner W/dbl layer | 90w Power | Bluetooth wireless card | Dell 1500 WiFi card with 802.1n draft | Windows XP Pro SP2 | 80w 9cell battery

Bottom line is running the 90 watt brick will eventually kill it.

why uppgrade your 9400/e1705 with a go7900gtx,
when you have better performance with your go7900gs........ (+ 1.24volt flash of course.......he he)

i get better 3dmark then a go7950gtx.....(not one single Artifact)

just use a PA-13 ac adapter and there you go.

Recently my 7900 GS died and I ordered a new one on ebay but I think the one I ordered was duel pipe, not single. Do I just follow the steps in this guide for installation? Is there any tinkering in Bios required if I'm just replacing the video card?

if you have dual pipes then it is the gtx model, not gs (just fyi) all you have to do is follow this guide and you'll be ok. you shouldn't have to tinker w/ bios unless you want to oc.

Actually there is a Dual pipe version of the 7900GS, it's the standard version for m1710 laptops

he he. its very true..... YOU CANT OC a go7900GTX equal like a go7900gs.....guess what. (go7900gtx dosent get this extra volt boost like go7900gs get)...... that why go7900gs is the number one on overclocking. you can easily OC a go7900gs from 375 to 600............try to OC a go7900gtx from 500 to 725........you cant so for me, i cant understand WHY uppgrade your go7900gs to a go7900gtx......it make NO sense........ i understand IF you have a x1400 or a go6800/go7800...then it make sense. ps..i get easily 5500 in 3dmak06 (NO Artifatcs + good temp)......go7900gtx get 4700 in 3dmark06 (non OC).........good enough for me

I had an overclocked 7900gs and upgraded to a 7950gtx. They both get about the same 3dmark scores but the 7950 performs much better when putting up the res on an external monitor and turning up the aa and what not. Even when playing on my laptop lcd I get better performance when turning up the aa. Just something I have noticed.

Step 1 Load new A01 9400/E1705 Bios onto the laptop Step 2 Remove Screen/Keyboard/palm rest from the laptop. .................... Step 6 Fit laptop back together, you should have a working system! Have also confirmed you do need the XPS 130W power adapter, as the 90W dies when graphics card it at full power. also 9 cell battery as it will not last long on a 6 Cell Hope you all find this helpfull!
Who confirmed this? Just curious b/c a Dell Tech Support rep told me that using anything than the stock 90w brick could fry the circuits and/or the battery and that the 90w brick will be able to charge and run the system even if the gpu has 45w consumption. Is he just or what? They won't even sell me one b/c of my system. Should I just take my chance of getting a POS off ebay? Thanks

Not true, you can run the 130 watt or 150 watt brick no problem at all.

Running under powered brick can be a problem.

As long as the voltage requirments are met for the laptop it will take what ever current it needs from the supply. (with in the design limits)
