HOW-TO: Upgrade your 9400/E1705 with the 512MB 7900 GTX "Photo Guide" - Page 4

265$$ How??????
He already said how. He told them he needed a replacement for his m1710. Money-making opportunity for m1710 owners...

At any rate, I glanced around on ebay and I'm kind of curious to see how many people agree with and how many people disagree with the following statement:

If you don't already have an e1705/9400, you'd be ahead to buy one of the m1710s listed in the FS section of this forum. If you buy a 2ghz,2gb667,100g7200,dvdrw,uxga,9cell e1705/9400, you're already looking at close to $2000. Add $400-ish for the video card (I personally have a hard time believing that after the way 7800gtx prices were) and the possibility of voiding the warranty, it seems to me you'd be better off buying an m1710. If you DO already have an e1705/9400, yeah this would work for you. However, I don't suggest anyone goes out and buys an e1705/9400 in order to save themselves some money. It probably won't do much for you.

Look at your invoice, if it says 8$ - that's 3-5 day, 12$ 2nd day, 16$ next day shipping.

The 7800GTX was originally 262.75$. And considering Dell usually starts prices at the same as the previous generation - it's not hard to believe at all.

We just need to be smarter than we were last time. If people try ordering 10 from Spare Parts to make money on eBay then they'll ruin it for everyone. And even if I already have my card I'll be pissed at the eBay'ers here that will actually be hurting the community instead of helping it with their price gouging.

You are right on JaxChris. I originally thought about not posting how I got the 7900gtx for $265 but I have received so many great deals from members posted here including my original M1710 ($2444) and my 1705 ($1222) that It is only fair that I did. I hope if people do get them it is for the purpose of upgrading their current laptop and not to sell them on Ebay. BTW JaxChris S+H = $8 so it is 3-5 days.

I tried adding a 7800 GTX card to my 9400. However to fit it in a UK Inspiron 9400 I had to:

Trim the right hand fan rear shround back about 5-10mm on its left hand side including plastic on top and metal plate underneath.

Snap the plastic either side of the left hand heat sink pocket so heatpipe will sit a bit lower

Remove the right hand rear keyboard mounting post as the offset on the notch for this post on the 7800 GTX is different from my old 7800 GO card and it doesnt fit.

So it all works. Fan stuck on first of all but a bit of fiddling fixed that. Will try 7900 GTX as soon as I can get one.

It overclocks 20%+ to 480MHz / 1.25GHz without issue. Scores over 8,300 on 3DMark 2005

So does the latest BIOS for the E1705 support the 7900GTX, or do you have to download the bios for the M1710?
I have not pulled mine apart yet.
But i can see that i will not be able to add a second hard drive with out losing something
Another thing?
How are you all getting the FAST shipping???
Mine will not be delivered until the 19th..

With those specs your looking in the 1300-1500 range rebates will vary this price. You also have to factor in you can sell the normal 9400 power brick and 7800 Go. You could probably get about 250-300 for all of that. Then you have to buy a 130 brick for around 30 and 7900GTX is 300.

I recently bought a loaded 9400 for 1228
-250 fot 7800 Go
-30 for 9400 power brick
+ 30 for 130 watt brick
+ 300 7900 GTX
= 1278 final price 50 dollar difference

So I don't think your 2000 guess is accurate.

Did you even read this thread?
Folide... you've got a PM.
Jax,
Yes, I actually read the thread almost in its entirety. The very first thread states to download the new BIOS for the E1705.. but the notes that I've read states it offers support for the 7900GS... not the GTX. My question was whether the new BIOS would optimally support the heat management necessary or whether there would be problems wth the heat and power requirements of the new GTX card.

So THAT'S my question. Perhaps you might want to point me to the thread that actually gives me the answer?

Thanx!
Evan

It seems they have caught on already. I still think the people that were able to get their order in will have it honored by Dell.

Ok my order was just cancelled. That teaches me a lesson about posting about a loophole in Dells ordering system.
