SERIOUS competitor to Dell's M1710!

alienware has got a new high end gaming laptop that most likely surpasses the M1710 in performance on their site...the Aurora mALX featuring:
- AMD Turion mobile 2.4Ghz 64bit
- DUAL 7900GTX in SLI
- 19" widescreen
- dual slot loading optical drives
- killer paint job
- new chassis (not the universal clevo)
link: http://www.alienware.com/product_det...de=SKU-DEFAULT

the notebook definetly raises the mobile gaming standard....if i had recently bought the m1710, i would have serious doubts if i wanted the most powerful system....

Doesn't Dell own Alienware?

You forget that we are not the "let's blow our entire life savings on a laptop" croud. A lot of systems have higher performance than the M1710. That doesn't make them better, you have to consider price and build quality in your "evaluation."

So basically no one here cares about AW.

Umm... that system is almost double the cost for my m1710...actually it is double the cost since the page you referenced is in USD. Although the SLI is nice, I can't imagine this thing getting any battery life. The screen size is nice, but the resolution is pretty low for its size.

Its, only 15 pounds and starts at $4500, sounds like a bargin, why not just build a desktop that is better and buy a m1710 or something

but still, it can be easily moved around compared to a desktop and it has the power of a gaming desktop. i am not an AW enthusiat, just thought id point out that there MAY be an alternative to the m1710 (putting cost aside) which is powerful and doesnt look ugly either

I bet all the Alienware forum posters are a little confused at how to react to Dell people now. HAHA.

In any case, I would not call this serious competition yet... which is weird, I would think there would be other companies who want a bite of the XPS market.

That is an oxymoron.

# Height: 1.4โ€
# Width: 18.75โ€
# Depth: 13.5โ€
# Weight: 15 lbs with battery

Holy crap!

At least AW did one thing right: Check out the sound card. Shame on you Dell, still that GOSH DARN onboard sound "ยง$%!
I think Aleinware or Dellware is making a 17" SLI 7900 laptop that may be a little lighter than the 19" version
post #14 of 66
Actually, the one that is interesting to me is the AW 17" SLI with dual 7900GS.

Unfortunately, my eyes just can't take the WUXGA resolution of the M1710, so I will be returning it to Dell. I like the fact that AW has a 17" 1440x900 with the better colors/glossy screen. I think two 7900GS running a 1440x900 with could handle all the eye candy turned on.

This is not an Alienware laptop, it's a Clevo chassis which is already available from Sager, Rock and other companies I believe.

I don't think it's the same market in the XPS M1710 at all, the latter is a 17 inch laptop but one of the reasons I like my XPS 2 is that it balances some mobility in there. A 19 inch SLI machine does not, even putting it aside there are other machines such as the Clevo D900k which are faster than the M1710 but again not necessarily better.

I like it except for the low screen res. If it had a Intel Core Duo and it had a 1920x1200 screen I would want one really bad. As it stands though I wouldn't pay $4500 for a processor that's not the latest tech even if the video setup is state of the art. Put it with a 2.13 Core Duo and a 1920x1200 screen and it would really make my mouth water but I still wouldn't think about $4500 for a laptop. If it was $3000 the way I stated it then I'd think it was the DEAL.

Also it's not really their fault on the screen res because I think that SLi almost requires a 19" screen to have space to physically fit in the case and I think no one makes a 19" panel over 1680x1050

The m9700 has SLI & a 17" 1920x1200 screen.

It would have been nice if they would have offered a FX-60 CPU instead of the ML44, but I'm sure the ML44 is no slouch either.

I really like it....

All but the cost !!

Maybe it will push other makers into a 19" screen so the cost comes down over time.

Or maybe just have some maker come up with a handy portable Lcd screen so we can keep a decent size and weight laptop to lug around with us.

Anyone know of a 19" LCD Screen that is portable with a case....let me know !!
Ok... so... like... no thank you!?
That it way to clunky for my taste!
The DELL XPS-2 I own is as big as it gets for me if we're talking notebooks here!
Plus the weight is nice for a 17 incher that size.
But nice for a mobile desktop replacement.
Then again.
Why not buy a big machine half the price and twice the dice???

The only things I've known to cost 300$ a pound or more are quite illegal in the US. =/
