To be considered a competitor shouldnt it be in the same price braket?

After having just had a disasterous laptop experience with AW I wouldn't buy another laptop from them until I was sure that Dell's influence was starting to improve AW's quality control.

So, until then, I'll sit tight with my XPS 1710. Besides, in 6 months even the m9700 will look like yestertech anyway...

I like the paint job.

The issues im having with the system is

Turion64, 19 lower res screen, 15 LBS!!!!!, $4500+

Seems like a clevo clone were expecting across the board with a much better case IMO. I can only imagine the powerbrick this thing comes with as well and find a backpack to git it all

Please>>>>>>

The laptop is in SLI.....but....

1. 7900GTX 256mb each!!!!
2. A lot of games run the same, if not worst in that mode.
3. 1680x1050....Blah
4. not super portable.

Not that great unleass you are upgrading from a 9300...

I agree with Johnmc, that is definately Clevo M590K. It just has a custom lid. Come on, do they make any of their own computers?
The XPS is already large. SLI uses a lot more battery power, and considering it's supposed to be two cards, what you gain in performance is not worth it.
Now there's a 19 inch laptop? I'd rather get a desktop!

(that coming from someone who's said he'd never buy a desktop again)

that's not a notebook... hahaha

I think that everyone knew that a 7900 GTX SLI solution was on it's way sooner rather than later, but personally I felt that the XPS M1710 was the right mix of performance and portability for me (actually, if they found a way to shove a 512 MB Go 7900 GTX in to a 15.4" notebook, that would be my choice). I personally lug the laptop between home and work, and at 10 lbs with power adapter, the M1710 is already heavy enough ... with a 19" screen and at 15 lbs without a power adapter (probably close to 17 lbs with it), you're really starting to push the limits. Not to mention that the M1710 has a docking connector, which I'm honestly surprised that more performance notebooks don't have.

I'm not saying that the Alienware solution isn't right for some people--because it is--but I personally am veryhappy with my decision. At that weight, size, and price point, I'm a little bit surprised at what the Alienware system is lacking. I'd think it would at least have the 1920x1200 resolution, a bluetooth module, and 512 MB video cards instead of 256 MB video cards.

sorry about that but you are wrong.

7900gtx 512mb doesnt give you a boost in 99% games compared to 256mb card.

game will run as fast or sli or not depedning on game but you can bet future game will run better on sli and dont forget the 2nd processor can act like a pysiq processor

3. 1680x1050 is a great resolution and will run newwer game natively easily

4. not portable.. it depend how strong you are... lan party baby

No, it's not a "SERIOUS competitor" to dell XPS 1710.

Look at the price and the estimate date.
It's not in the same market, nor the same period.

I'm sorry.but it lacks some really nice features of the m90/m1710...like perhaps...internal sound..from what I can tell the thing depends on a PCMCIA Audigy for sound...not for my $4500!!!! (1) It seems as though the internal Wireless isn't htat great and to upgrade to A (which I agree is not necessary) you have to buy external, I've always gotten better range with my internal Intel in my dell than with any external card..so that tells me thier internal royally sucks!! (2) My last complaint is the screen resolution. Sorry....but I don't just use my laptop for games, and I really prefer the higher the resolution the better. Hell for a 19" i'd really want 2560x1600!!!...whens that baby coming out

(1)hard to tell if the SC is internal or not..the config screen says pcmcia, so I guess there is a crappy internal and you get a pcmcia audigy..as a consumer, this is what I will base my opinion on. Granted, at this moment there is still no great sound option for the m1710...the 'audigy' add on sucks for it. I have it ...I know (I purchased it for my m90, so maybe it's different on the m1710...as in more features)

(2) I base this on the "Recommended for Longer Range!" statement on the site. Also, I don't consider a PCMCIA card with an external antenna lead a good compromise for range.

A few more complaints. The keyboard has a numeric pad....I hate this as it off centers the main keyboard. not good IMO. Also, if in fact the soundcard is a PCMCIA card, the thing only has one PCMCIA slot, so you have to choose between wireless and sound...sucky sucky (edit: that is if you indeed go for the external, which they say you need for better range).

Please note..I still can't find anything that says the soundcard is internal and not simply a PCMCIA card.

gosh darnit..one more complaint. only one Monitor out..so if I want to use dual 2405's I'm out of luck ....oh yeah....like someone else said...no docking port....MAJOR SUCKY!!!!
The ALX is in a league by itself really. Not really a fair coprion by any means. ALX customers are bread to there own as well. The 9700 look sdecen and has 2 hds etc. But again i think it is more of a serious tech geek cool factor and I am sure it will kick major booteh in games. The xps/m170/1710 are great machine in there own right and i think a tad better than the standard clevo d900t/7700 chassis personally.

So basically no one here cares about AW.
