Dell Inspiron 6400 - Customer Review

Hi everybody ! Yes .. Believe it or not, I bought myself a portable computer ... I know, I know ... I have maybe annoyed some people during my search, but please beleive that all your help was and will be always a precious thing for me.

It took me a long time to make my choice ! It’s been nearly 1 ½ year that I have started to search for the perfect laptop for me. That started slowly and then projected me in a parallel world : the mobile computer world, a world full of challenges. All this time to search and increase my knowledge even gave me the taste to continue to enrich specialize myself, once the studies are over, in the mobile computer domain. I find this world, the computer one, never stops ; there is always something to improve. always something to learn ...

My choice finally stopped, after all those long months of research, on the Dell Inspiron 6400 ( or E1505 in the U.S.A ). In the next paragraphs, I will try to describe to you as much as possible this wonderful computer. Have a nice reading !

First of all, what’s better than to start with a complete report of our precious hardware identification application that we all know : Everest Home Edition Version 2.20 ...

Here are the most important components :

Core Duo T2300 ( 1,66 Ghz / 667 MHz FSB / 2 MB L2 Cache )
15,4_ WXGA High-Definition supporting TrueLife Technology
80 GB Hard-Drive
512 MB DDR2 SDRAM @ 533 MHz ( 1x512 MB ) ( Timming 4,4,4,12 )
9-Cell Primary Battery
Windows XP Media Center operating system
ATi Mobility Radeon X1400
Intel PRO/Wireless 3945 ABG Network Connection
CD-RW & DVD +/-/RW Burner

Good ! Enough speaking about the components. Leave the place to my review about this wonderful products directly from Dell.

Start by the quality-built and the design of the computer if you want ...

The construction ... wonderful ! Of all the portable computers that I had the chance to see in several stores, the Inspiron 6400 is the computer that has the best quality-built. I never saw a laptop with a case so well built than the one that I have on my laps. When the HP dv1000 or dv5000 lines has 10 000 multimedia buttons for the QucikPlay application, the Dell as only one for the Dell MediaDirect application. On the keyboard, there is only 4 buttons : two play the role of the digital pad, as in the case of a USB mouse, accompanied by the On/Off button and of course the Dell MediaDirect.. The front multimedia buttons are even easy to use ! Back lighted to have a better vision on what we push when we are in a dark environment, they are clear and have all the base functions for a multimedia computer. From left to right, there is the Mute button, the down and up volume button, the Play/Pause button, which can play a song or a video, back and forward button, and of course the Stop button, which can stop playing a song or other multimedia things.

The general design of the laptop is well done and, things very important for me, don’t have the same style of the IBM ThinkPad with its metallic-grey color and with its to large white lines each side of the case which forms a completion touch of the case. For the back panel of the LCD screen, it comes with the standard metallic-grey, the same color beside the keyboard, or with a choice of four colors : Mediterranean Blue, Cherrywood, Carbon Fiber ( as I ordered on my model ) and finally the last available color from Dell, Charcoal with a leather finish. I personally like the Carbon Fiber because I find that this color match well with the black bottom part of the laptop. But you’ll tell me that the color choice isn’t debatable. Notice that if you don’t want the colour anymore, it’s always possible to change it for another QuickSnap panel.

Another essential component for the computer is the digital pad. It is large ; about three inches by 2 inches. Obviously, this digital pad is accompanied of two mouse buttons which divide in two parts the width of the pad. This last has also two scrolling bars, a vertical and a horizontal scrolling bar. Notice that the digital pad is entirely customizable. It is possible to attribute to each corner of the pad a specific task, as the back or forward page or to maximize/minimize the current window. These options are available in a little program that comes with the Synaptics driver and can be changed for other tasks as you want.

The thermal dissipassion of the computer

Like all the portable computers, Dell Inspiron 6400 make a little bit heat. But I found that the latter extremely was well dissipated through out all the case. On the other hand, I feel on my knees which heat is stronger in the lower part of the screen, just beside the principal air intake. I believe indeed that it is the place where the lamp is located which is used to make the screen work. You will surely notice that there are small openings each sides of the keyboard. I believe that this is to help the heat better dissipate itself. In summary, these small traps in the case belong to the look of the computer. You will also notice on my photographs that Inspiron 6400 has two other air intakes on the right and on the rear side of the portable. All its air intakes are of course controlled by a ventilator. This ventilator is located in the lower part of the case and is connected not only to its principal intake air, located in the lower part of the ventilator, but also on the two other vents on the sides. The ventilator makes noise, but be reassured, that lasts only a few seconds. Indeed, the ventilator has three speeds. Most of the time, a small minute on the first speed is enough to cool the computer from five to seven degrees, but when you do many multi-threaded applications or when you make phot editing, it may passes from the first to the third speed. And then, believe me, there is a tornado in the Inspiron ! That happened to me that only one to hear the third speed. This speed only lasts a few seconds. I timed the duration and I arrived from there is eight seconds of use the third speed. These height seconds have been enough to make the temperature decrease from sixty to fifty degrees Celsius. Yes ! Eight seconds to lower the temperature of ten degrees. Really effective this small ventilator ! This last is generally put in function when the processor is around thirty-five to forty degrees, which is extremely rare. Most of the time, the temperature of the Cpre Duo is around twenty?five to thirty degrees, temperature to which my desk?top computer equipped with an Intel Inside Pentium III clocked at 800 MHz exceeds from ten to fifteen degrees ! As for the hard disk, it borders the thirty?five to forty Celsius degrees.

When the ventilator is started at the second speed, if your computer is on your knees, you will feel that heat decreases. Finally, the cooling system is very effective ! I noticed that when I play a DVD, the ventilator doesn’t start and even if the portable is on your laps, heat remains more than bearable.

About the screen ...

This last essential component of the Dell Inspiron 6400 is remarkably marvellous. It is extremely clear, net and it offers rich colors and contrasts comparable with my screen CRT Samsung. The screen resolution is also very good. And fortunately, the ACL component does not contain any dead pixel. A council: especially, do not put the brightness of the screen to the maximum by awaking you the morning ! Your eyes will be dazzled by the light of the screen. The brightness is indeed superb.

An astonishing component: the speakers !

Wow ! I really did not expect that joke ! When I read a critic of the model which I have bought, I laughed when the author of this criticism said that the speakers were remarkably good. And well I did not laugh anymore while I started to play a rock song of Three Days Grace and of Offspring ! The quality of the sound is remarkably good for a portable computer ! The speakers make you listen to a clear and net sound, accompanied on the other hand by a too low level of bass, obviously. But it is certainly possible to listen to a DVD in a room containing several people. On the other hand, I did not find the equalizer as we can find on a desktop computer. I only found the equalizer that use Winamp or Windows Media Player programs. It is however possible to get a software of AUDIGY (creators of SoundBlaster) and to install it to personalize the remarkable sound for a portable which the speaker offers. On the other hand, it is hollowing out that my small Yamaha cases (although it is not expensive) offer better bass than those of the speakers of Inspiron 6400. On the external sound ports that the motherboard offers to us, the Dell MM061 offers headphones (mini?jack out) port and a microphone (mini?jack in) port.

And on the performance level ?

There is no doubt: Pentium Mr. Yonah (alias Core Duet) clocked to 1667 MHz is powerful and fast ! I made a small comparison by extracting the pieces of a compact disk. For the same disc, that took a little less than two minutes to finish the extraction on my Intel Inside Pentium III clocked at 800 MHz. When Core Duo functions using the battery, it downclock its speed to 1000 MHz (1 Ghz) to save the battery.

For the photo edition, Core Duo show me that it is nearly three times faster than my Pentium III and close to twice as much as Pentium M Dothan (Centrino?2) of my father in his Dell Latitude D600 clocked at 1.60 Ghz. On the other hand, it is certain that ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 of 256 MB accompanied by HyperMemory technology of ATI, Inspiron 6400 can’t be better than my two other computers equipped with integrated graphics chipset in term of photo editing.

Unfortunately, I did not have time to make benchmarks with 3DMark. On the other hand, it may be possible that I edit my article later when I have time to make the test.

Autonomy

The battery containing nine cells is particularly excellent. I expected approximately five hours of average autonomy. But Inspiron 6400 is not satisfied with “only” five hours of autonomy, but rather six hours ! If all the wireless connection devices Wi?Fi are turned off and if you put the luminosity of the screen at the medium level, you can have six hours of battery easily !

The battery recharge time is quick. For the seventy to eighty percent, it takes a few seconds more than one minute to obtain a percent. The speed of charge is an important thing for travelers who can give a boots of a few invaluable percent during waiting at the airport.

Another important point: the keyboard !

I did not speak about this component which nevertheless plays an important part in a portable computer. The keyboard which equips the Dell Inspiron 6400 is of quality. Even as it is more comfortable with tapper than keyboards which equips Dell Latitude D600 with my father. This last is punt and almost does not rebound, while that of Inspiron is slightly curvature.

Ports

Dell Inspiron 6400 integrates all the standard ports that a portable computer must have. The MM061 motherboard has like external connections four Universal Serial Bus (USB), 1 FireWire 1394 and one ExpressCard Slot, without forgetting it 5?in?1 Digital Media Card Reader. ATi Mobility Radeon has a external VGA?Out port and S?Video?Out. On the networking side, Inspiron 6400 has an integrated network card Broadcom 440x which includes 10/100 Mbps network ports.

The operating system and pre-installed software’s

As pre-installed programs, there is AOL, Sonic, McAfee, WordPerfect Office 12, PowerDVD, QuickTime and I pass from there ! On the other hand, Windows XP Media Center is very well. It was my first experiment with Media Center and I of it am more than satisfied. Media Center, for those which do not know it, is a regrouping of Windows XP Professional with the Home edition and Microsoft added to it some functions multi?media with a more convivial and easier interface with used than Windows XP. It is as much easy to configure than to use. Between the multi?media options , you will finds the menu regrouping all the music of your computer, videos, radio, a men regrouping all the digital photos of your hard-drive. You can also record and watch television programs with the TV Tuner and the Windows XP Media Center remote control, option which is very expensive that I did not choose.

Dell also included Dell MediaDirect, software which makes it possible to listen to music, videos and DVD by pushing only one button when the computer is turned-off. While pressing on this button, the computer starts and reaches the software without booting up Windows completely, thus saving energy of the battery. In short, quite practical software. As the speakers are on the front of the case, it is possible to close the screen when you want to listen to music, another point which still saves energy.

And the price !

The price is not so bad ! I paid exactly 1.450 $ CDN for my configuration. I have also the backpack included in the price. On the other hand, I recommend to call to the Dell service to obtain a better price, thing which I did.

While speaking about the accessories

As regards to the means of transportation of the computer, I chose a backpack. I thought that this kind of case would be less difficult to be stolen. Indeed, if you have a carrying case which you hold in a hand, it is easier to be stolen in a public place when you want to leave your wallet or when you are distracted for a few seconds. While a backpack is always held on the back thus there is no need to remove it. I also got a surge-protector, essential thing for any computer. I thought that a small thing of about fifteen dollars could avoid me many hundreds of dollars. Indeed, it is not very affordable a laptop motherboard ! I chose a model of Belkin, a F9H220?TVL?DL. This model has two outlets on each side, is light and controls also the surcharges contained in a network with its RJ?11/ RJ?45 network connectors. In short, a quite practical safety device.

Conclusion

For my first portable computer of my life, the Dell Inspiron 6400 gives me the taste to have others in the future ! The qualities of this notebook follow one after the other and the defects are rare ! The Core Duo mobile processor performs very well and is extremely fast. The screen is of a superb brightness and make an ergonomic climate with the excellent keyboard, nothing to see with the portables of the Latitude line of Dell. Heat is well dissipated in the lower part of the case but the laptop heats more when it is connected on the sector. Windows XP Media Center is very well and is a must have with a multimedia computer like the Inspiron 6400. I was surprised by the astonishing quality of the speakers which Dell Inspiron 6400 offers. In short, here a few lines the outstanding facts which my new computer offers:

I like:

The quality of the screen
The quality of the speakers
The excellent keyboard
Power and speed of Core Duo
The quality of the graphics board in games (although the resolution should be lowered a little bit)
The silence of the portable during a prolonged use
Excellent life of the battery containing nine cells
Partition hidden to restore the system by Dell
The extremely practical digital media card reader
Multimedia keys on the front of the case

I don’t really like :

No options for nVIDIA graphics controllers and also no options for higher-end graphics controllers like ATI Mobility Radeon X1600

For those who don’t like the screen with the glossy finish, there is no option with the highest resolution of the screen with the mat finish.
The incredible number of useless software installed by Dell

That finishes my review on my new baby. Hoping it helped several people seeking a computer, I thank you for reading my review.

Then, when is the purchase of your portable computer ?

Good end of day !

Ghost26, happy owner of a Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop.

Repped as well.

Wtf is that?
Umm, you get an "A" for effort but a "F" for execution. I'm not trying to be mean, but that was the worst review I've ever read. I would highly recommend you edit the post, take out the data log(no one wants to read all that, nor can most of us as it's in French), take out the weird Smiley thing right under the Thermal Dissapation paragraph and tidy things up a bit. We don't mind if you have a thorough, in-depth review but this is just too much info I'm afraid. We do appreciate the effort, but I don't think many people will read the whole thing as it's too difficult to find the meat of the article.

My roomate has the same laptop and he is pretty happy with it. Solid review for what was in English.

BTW: There is nothing worse then downloading images one at a time at 30KB/s.

haha, not to mention not directly linking to them, but putting them on a site intended for file archive hosting.

Wow, you guys are really pleasant.

The guy tries to write a review in what's obviously not his native tongue and this is the response he gets? Nice...

The word choice was questionable. Mr. Yonah? I thought a Core Duo and a Yonah-branded processor were two different types...o_o

yup just for my sister's dell e1505. i was astonished by the sound level/quality of the speakers. never seen taht in any other laptop. heck not even my ferrari laptop. the screen is pretty good as well. i prefer my screen though. /brighter. lastly one complaint i had is that the system RUNS VERY SLOWWWWWWWW. maybe its the junk dell put? (i removed as much crap as possible and its still slow) i dont want to restore it w/ my own copy then i will have problems w/ updates.

but the build quality is good so far. lets see how it runs down the road 3-6months
