Yay!!! Overheating, freezing, memory errors..YES I GET TO SEND IT BACK AGAIN!!!

Three days ago I finally got my computer back from a two month repair. I get it, and it starts and runs like it was brand-****ing-new....for three days. No sooner than I just start enjoying it again, I start getting the same problems I got that caused me to send the system in in the first place. Constant, random restards. No warning. No freezing. Just restarting.

At first it was only in graphic intense programs. Then, it started doing it at random times even when using such few resources browsing the internet with no multitasking. Now, it restarts after about a minute after start up-that is if it even starts up. You'd think I could go into safe mode and try to narrow it down...nope. Safe mode-or any setting for the most part-loads up untill after the windows loading screen with the progress bars, than restarts. The only setting that works is when I load windows normally, but that luck only lasts for a minute or so.

Well well well, that does not go over well with me AT ALL. Seeing as they have had my computer for TWO AND A HALF MONTHS, for the simple task of replacing the motherboard (which, by the way was a used motherboard), my warranty expires in two weeks, and I do not have the option to extend as I have somehow "passed the timeframe in which I can extend my warranty".

I am not asking for anyones approval. I am merely telling you; I demand compensation, or my money back. I refuse to accept the idea that AW can get away with charging me 3500 dollars for a paperweight, when I paid for a Ferrari.

Now before you jump the gun and say "but you probably misused it, or drove it to the grave". Ummmm, in the year I have had it, I have played MAYBE 100 hours of Half Life 2. Other than that, I merely use it for work (video editing-big whoop), movies, and music. There is no way in heaven or hell that one could say I "over-used" this computer. As far as the life time is concerned-for 3500 dollars, I MORE THAN EXPECT a years use. But I didnt even get that. I got maybe 3 months out of it before the onslought of errors started, and I have over 1200 tech-support confirmation emails to vouch for it.

So, now that I have said my bit and gotten the word out that I may be the first david to take on goliath, I want to know what you all think I deserve for this matter, if anything. Any and all comments and replies are welcome. Thanks....

Oh, and let me add this:

When we were trying to solve the problems and I was instructed to get my respawn CD, I was disapointed to find out that some ass-**** forgot to put the DVD in the case...So that will definatly be going in my "To whom it may concern" letter. And no, I did not misplace it. In all honesty, that was the first time I took the CD case out of the box.

have you tried reinstalling windows with the windows cd? when i got mine back from depot they didn't wipe it and nothing worked right. they didn't test it very well. once i reformated and put a fresh copy o' winblows everything worked great. do you have raid? if so you can disable your raid and only use one drive at a time that way you'd know if it was a HD. same thing with more then one stick of ram. disable HT if only one stick. it'll all take time and be a pain in the arse but it'll tell you what's wrong. if nothing helps then it's probably mobo or vid card.

Hes a "One-upper" but seroisly replace the harddrive and re install windows that will fix it

Well seeing as the motherboard is "new"(refurbished), and the video card was new and only used for maybe a week before I had to send it in, I have been thinking it is the HDD's. I am using RAID, and it is two 60 gig disks. I called AW this morning and they would not walk me through how to check it this way. Its like they want me to suffer. I also have two sticks of 512 ram.

But check this...When I was trying to problem solve by myself this morning(keep in mind its now only 7am, so ive been at it for a while), I tried logging in in safe mode. It seems to restart when it gets to the file Mup.sys, in the system32/drivers folder.

sooo...

Im lost.

Windows Freezes at Mup.sys

I did a google for you and this is one of the links. Might want to check it out. I didnt look into it too much but if you dont find good info there, just search for Mup.sys again for more info.

it sounds to me that windows is blown out of portion. I' d reformat the HDs and reinstall windows. you'll need to d/l the raid drivers. there are two versions I'd get them both and put them on seperate floppys. one wouldn't work for me. after you have your raid drivers on floppy just put the windows cd in the optical and reboot, hit a key to boot from cd. then it'll tell you to press f6(or something like that) to load raid drivers, do that. put floppy with raid drivers in and just follow onscreen instructions. when your done it'll be like brand new. It's worth a shot. You'll have to load the drivers from either the AW web site or the utility cd when windows is done installing. If it's still acting up then it's a hardware issue.

Its the actuall hard drives. They are damaged. I completed the tests on my own that I was supposed to run when on the phone with the AW support origionally. I also ran the memory test, and that is fubar. So much wrong. Also, the video card fan stopped spinning. Hmmm...yay! more for me to complain about.

Meh, im not so pissed about it now as I was the yesterday. But I am still quite insulted that they would not properly test this before sending it from the depot.

edit:I did not read the previous reply. That was the test I ran.

I think you deserve what your warranty says you deserve. Send it back.

All warranty repairs are also warranted for a period of time, even if your standard warranty has expired.

Shut downs like you describe aren't usually hard drive. Hard drive problems usually involve freezing and error messages. An instant reboot is usually memory, mobo, or overheating.

I'd first reformat and reinstall windows, especially if you're having issues with specific files during boot. It's possible you have a virus also... Reformatting and doing a clean install from your windows disc will eliminate software issues as a concern.

I'd also think about flashing the bios, but don't do that without letting Alienware know or your two weeks left on your warranty will be void.

With that much hardware showing issues, it's likely a power supply or motherboard issue. If the power supply or mobo allows too much voltage, it can fry several components...

Well I have 4 powerbricks...Tried them all. There is no overheating, either. So scratch that idea.

Great news everybody! I tried reformating my hard drives, and guess what happened! Well, the first few tries, it kept saying that it could not find any hard drives. After a few times of that, I finally made it through to the License Agreement page where it has all the windows mumbo jumbo. one F8, and one ENTER later, I get the wonderous BSOD!!!!! So I try again, and again, and a third time and, to my avail, get that wonderous blue screen each time! Yay for me!!!

Wow, is it just me or is my luck OUTSTANDING?! I'd look out, boys. I wouldnt want to rub any of that luck onto you.

just wondering. during installation, when it asks for the raid drivers do you need to install your own?

Come again? Im not sure what your talking about exactly.
watch when your installing windows. there will be a moment when you need to press some keys in order to install your own Alienware Raid drivers. you didnt post your specs here but you did say you had raid. call Alienware and ask them about needing raid drivers for reinstalling windows.

that's why it couldn't find your HD. the raid drivers have to be on floppy and you have to make it because AW probably didn't send you one. you can find the driver on this forum or at AW. There are two sets of drivers. one wouldn't work for me so your more then likely going to have to download both. put them on seperate floppys and try each one. make sure if they are zipped to extract them before copying to floppy. when it's loading the windows cd it'll say press f6(I think) to load any third party raid drivers. press f6 then wait for it to finish loading. It'll act like nothing happened until it's done loading. hope this helps.
