Dell starts selling E1705/9400 with nvidia 7900gs

I just read in the PC WORLD I got in my mail box today that they reviewed a DELL E1705/9400 w/ nvidia 7900gs (they say available in june)!!! wat the heck, and I just ordered mine yesterday with the 7800... should I cancel my order and wait for the 7900gs configuration to be available? I did order mine with the $850 off $2000 coupons though, so I got a good deal, only under $1200...

Is there a big difference in performance between the 7800plain and 7900gs ? if so by how much?

here's a picture if you don't believe me! doesn't this make all of you regret getting the e1705/9400 with the nvidia 7800!

If you are into gaming I would cancel and reorder next month. I thought I heard that it would give performance near to that of the 7800 GTX, which I believe is a substantial boost from the plain 7800.

Do you think I can just swap out my 7800 and upgrade to the 7900gs down the road? Cause I think 7800 is more than enough right now for ALL games right?

And how much more expensive would the 7900gs be? $500 ?

Is that easy to do? The nvidia drivers supports OC natively right? You just drag the slider up higher?

Well the main nice thing about the 7900 GS IMO is that it uses less energy. Which not only means longer batt life, but also less heat.

The 7800 runs VERY hot... in fact so hot im going to try and return my notebook. Alot of people dont think its practical to use a 17in on your lap, but I actually think its very comfortable. And becasuse it is so big, there is enough room to fit your legs in between the vents... which actually lets the GPU run cooler than it does on a flat surface.

EDIT: Yes you can get drivers that let you OC. The 7800 is pretty powerful when OC'd. I have mine at 360 / 900, and I can run The new Tomb Raider at full with 2x AA, 2xAF, Vertical sync, and transparency supersampling on running at 1440x900. But like I said. It is VERY hot. When running this game the GPU is ~80-82C, which I think is like almost 200F.

When did you buy yours? I heard dell now sells a 7800 revision 2 which runs cooler on the e1705/9400...

Or is the rev 2 of the 7800 still running hot...

hahaha well maybe yours run so hot because you overclocked it no? I have a nvidia 6600go on my 15" right now, how is the 7800plain compared to that and the 6800ultra my friend has? THANKS!

I have no idea what I have... got it the day it came back again after the long 7800 shortage.

So Im assuming its the gen 2 or whatever. If this is "cooler" than before, then I would hate to have one of the older ones.

The performance gain on the 7900 is ~10-15% better than the 7800. I mean... Ill take it but its still very similar to the 7800. Both of these cards will be outdated at about the same time.

If dell gets the clock-speed right this time, the 7900gs will be way faster than the 7800go, its actually only a tad slower than the 7800gtx go, look at the zdnet-review of the toshiba p105 with 7900gs if you dont belive me

Well I just looked at the nvidia website and it seems the 7800 and 7900gs is about the same... So I guess that around 10% faster is probably not going to make any major differences in gaming...

But wow, the 7800 is twice as fast as my current 6600 lol...

You tricked us. I thought you meant that Dell strated to sell the e1705/9400 with the 7900gs today. But yeah, the 7900gs has more pipelines than the 7800 vanilla.

Call me stupid but 432/945 oc, what is the original number before oc?

And does it even run stable, any artifacts or crashes? Arent you like burning out your video card (shorten overall life span) by running it much faster?

The card comes at 250 / 600 something. I have no idea how he got it to 430. 370/920 is the highest I can get mine.

Plus I would imagine it would run even hotter that that OC... which IMO would just not be acceptable.

I'm planning to upgrade the ram myself to 2gb, dell's a ripoff, now what is the difference between:

DDR2 667 (PC2 5300)

and the:

DDR2 667 (PC2 5400)

PC5300 and PC5400 won't make a difference at all. The timings are locked in the BIOS, you won't notice a difference.

The dell massively underclocks the 7800go, numbers sucks as vertices/seconds dont reflet real life perormance, look at this test and see what the 7900GS is capable of. Its about as fast as the 7800GTX go which is MUCH faster than the dell 7800go...

why does dell underclock it by so much? To keep it running cooler or what? And so, doesnt this mean we can just OVERclock it back up to higher, then that would narrow the difference down alot from the 7900gs

To prevent errors due to not all samples of GPU's and memory being equal. Some suck more than others. So you take a 100 unit test run... push the hell out of them, and whichever speed is the safest for the worst card is what you clock them all at for default. This saves alot of support calls from the average joe.
