Precision m90 review - Page 2

Update:

I guess I am going on about two weeks so far with my m90 and I can't really say anything negative.

I remedied my wireless issues after about five frustrating days. I determined that my dlink cable modem was the problem(about 95 % sure).

The lenovo mini pci express based on the atheros chipset would not work properly. It was recognized, but I could never resolve the conflict. Tried about 10 different drivers, but couldn't get it working properly. I am currently using the dell 1490 and it works well, although it seems to have just an ok antenna. Regardless my wireless is working flwlessly at this point.

I tried one of the drivers from laptopvideotogo and saw no real gain in performance or quality. It did screw up my monitor setup..I would have to manually make changed from laptop to external and vice versa whereas the dell drivers make changes automatically.

I had some weird font switching going on(It would change font size on its own very rapidly), but that has gone away. I am also having some sound crackling, but I think it's related to the latest directx update. Overall this thing rocks and I would buy it again.

I haven't yet, but it is very easy to do. Same process as the 7800gtx bascically.

Yes mate......but I am wondering whether, unlike the 7800gtx, whether the M90 gpu is locked......thanks

The point I was making is that it is bios locked just like the 7800gtx, but can be overclocked by flashing. I may try it today.

mmmm....didnt know the 7800gtx was locked.....my 7800gtx wasnt locked at all. I thought it was only the M90 card ......Are you sure?

I know for sure the the quadro fx 2500m is bios locked, and in the 17" section there are many threads about how to flash the bios of the 7800gtx so I'll make the assumption that they were as well (not calling you a liar, perhaps dell started locking it at some point).

Flashing the m90s gpu bios is pretty easy and i"ve had mine up to 625/737 stable, but I removed it as I am expecting a replacement soon.

What did it bench in 3dmark 05 when overclocked?

Also my 7800gtx was a clevo not a Dell .... Sorry

Thanks for the detailed review, cdd543. Please let me know this: Is the glossy M90 screen as glossy or have the glare of the TRue Life on the 9400? I am about to order.
Its not as glossy...gloss factor is approx 50-60% of the truelife gloss.....still good for gaming.
Thanks, SGG. Then it's easy on the eye for everyday work too?

I'd say so .....if its for gaming then truelife gives the best finish. This screen is more a semigloss.....you can see your outline but not your reflection in the screen....definately less of a distraction than a truelife screen

I am extremely happy with my m90 from a gamers viewpoint and a graphics artist/photographers standpoint. I played several hours of COD2, edited a few hundred photos and done stuff in 3dsmax and XSI.

The screen is a gorgeous semi-gloss that has very little reflection but it gives off enough vibrance for color saturation, clarity and brightness.

This is a great thread as far as dealing with the issues regarding gaming, video editing and regular use. My special thanks to SGG and maxrule and cdd543 for the helpful answers to my detailed video/screen questions.

is the drive in the m90 SATA?

Yup

On a slightly separate matter I have noticed that my GPU and CPU idle temps are between 28-32 C. Compared to other beastie lappies that is outstanding. Hits 75C under stress but thats not for too long. Consequently this machine is very very quiet
post #38 of 115
Just for a comparison, my idle GPU temps. average 63C. And, I have the lower resolution matte screen with the 1500FX video card.
Go figure. I wonder if the 1500 has one or two heatpipes.

What do you use to measure temps? Mine runs much hotter according to i8kfangui and NVidia CP... Is it with fans always on slow?
