Mandrake 9.2 + 4780 + 2.4 and/or 2.6 kernel

Thread Starter
Hello all,

I just wanted to inform anyone who plans to have Mandrake 9.2 installed on a 4780 that, despite what Mandrake's hardware compatibility website says, it is possible to install and run it. Unfortunately, in order for Mandrake to start up properly without freezing at "Finding module dependencies..." like it did for me, USB support has to be disabled for the 2.4 kernel by adding "nousb" w/o quotes to the append string.

Of course, it's possible that the situation only happened on my laptop because I seem to be a magnet for technological trouble. Heh, magnet, funny.

Anyway, I have not tried disabling the USB2.0 Host in the BIOS, although I doubt that will help much as Linux bypasses the BIOS for a lot of information (like HT!) and it could get even worse if there are discrepancies between BIOS settings and what Linux thinks the laptop has. *shudder*

Some good news is, I installed an experimental 2.6 mdk kernel, and it does not freeze when USB is enabled. Now I'm just having trouble getting X to start... Oh well, you win some, you lose some.

Are you trying the ATI drivers. Unfortunately the DRI support for the 9600 card is not quite there in X so you have to use either the ATI drivers or the vesa driver - unfortunately with the vesa driver you will not get 3d

You might also want to take a look at the thread I started on Gentoo on the 4780. If there's a way to get the ATI drivers working at 100% on the 4780, I haven't found it. Neither the kernel AGP modules or the one internal to the ATI drivers seem to deal with the SiS chipset properly.

I've read that XFree 4.4rcx has lots of improvements for SIS among other chipsets.

Thats what they say. Only issue I have now is that mandrake are having some sort of licensing BS with Xfree 4.4

I read that too. Seems that it's a problem with the new documentation requirements. I read the majority of the thread on the cooker list. Some real interesting reading. Here's the link if you're interested. http://archives.mandrakelinux.com/co...2/msg04596.php
