Aspire 5672 Audio Problem (Choppy)

Thread Starter
I have an Aspire 5672 that works fine for the most part until it suddenly starts choking on whatever audio is playing (stuttering through it).

I un-installed and re-installed the drivers from Acer's website.

I even used the WDM drivers from RealTek directly.

It feels like a software problem but who knows? Am hoping I don't have to send it to them for evaluation/repair.

Anybody else have this problem?

Yup, had the EXACT same thing. Owned mine for 6 days when that happened. It just came out of the blue. If you would power down for ~5 minutes and turn it back on it would work for 20-45 seconds and chop again. Acer wouldn't replace it (even though it was only 6 days old) so i had to send it in. They sat on it for 16 days before i got it back. They replaced the motherboard (or so they say). They kept my original packaging i sent it in, and put 3 nice large scratches on the laptop lid. Beware of Acer support!!

Edit: I even formatted in addition to reinstalling drivers. It is not a software issue (not in my case).

Okay - but when you got it back, the issue was fixed, yes?

So far so good...I don't hold much luck now though, obviously it wasn't an isolated incident like i had hoped for. Cause you have the exact same thing that happened to mine.

Few tips: Don't send it back in the original boxing if you planned on keeping that, they don't send it back.

Get anything you need off the hard drive, cause it's coming back with Acer bloatware install again.

Take pics of it before it goes in. They put 3 scratches into mine, and i figured it would have been to hard to prove it, so i just left it be. They are obviously not gentle with it.

Expect them to take a long time. They tell you 7-10 days or whatever, but mine took 16!

Expect them to screwup somehow, Acer support is awful.

Good luck, been there done that already

I'm having the same problem . At the beginning stage , i turned off the screen saver and updated the audio driver RealTek 2.6.0.3 then it was fined . But when i played games like Battlefield 2 , the choppy sounds or the statter audio will come right back again.

Could it be related to the fact that i changed my partition type to NTFS ? and i might have to change the system back to it's original state ?

Thanx

They sent it back saying it was "repaired" and that they recommended loading the original software to resolve. Sort of cryptic... is it resolved or not?

Either way, it is *not* resolved and we are still experiencing the problem.

This, despite a letter I sent asking them not to send it back without performing any work and if they couldn't reproduce the problem, to call me.

So... back it goes. I presume I will have to re-load the original software, however, confirm the problem still exists... then send it back.

Suffice to say, I'm not happy.

Acer quality control really SUCKS !

It seems like this problem exist on a few 5672 laptop , and this totally shine a light on how crappy Acer's quality control is !

I'm also a owner with the choppy sound 5672 .Aside from the randomly showing up choppy sound , i also have the problem of hizzing sound from the sound card whenever i touch the touch pad .

I know that if Acer's repair ppl can't reproduce the choppy sound they will just claim it's fixed , so i will ask them to make that hizzing sound go away by replacing the sound card .

does this always happen or just when you conect the notebook to te current??

maybe its a electricity problem

I just got my 5672 back from Acer's repair depot . They didn't bother to take a closer look and conluded they couldn not reproduce the problem . And that very same night when i got my acer back , the choppy sounds comes again ! .... as i turn the volume to the max while playing a MP3 , choppy sounds .

I will try to determine how to consistantly produce this problem and send it back again. But this should never be my duty as a consumer anyway ! Why should i be Acer's QA ?!

I also have a 5672 with an audio problem, however this only manifests itself in Battlefield 2 (or so it seems).

Basicly, with the microphone plugged in it sound just fine in windows, I can talk and hear myself, a good rich sound. However when I try and set up BF2 voip the stand alone program crashes and in BF2 voip will only work for a second before starting to feedback on itself, and if I haven't made any sound in that first moment, no sound is sent at all. Consequently, I can no longer use voip, a serious blow to my BF2 game. Anybody experienced anything like this and found a fix? Because I'm kinda desperate!

EDIT: To add more info, in the volume control panel in either windows or the Realtek audio software, the options for audio input are greyed out. I cannot adjust the levels. The microphone appears to be controlled soley by the audio output controls. Also, is there a way to disable the microphone that is built into the laptop so that only my external mic works, as it does not cut off the internal mic when the external one is plugged in.

Well . my problem originated first in BF2 aswell . It was normally during the intro movie where the first sign of the F 18 flew by , the sound became choppy ( stuttering ) and from that point on , any sound became choppy .

For some UNKONWN reason , the problem dissapeared the following days . A few days later i decided to play some mp3 using Winamp , and soon as i did that , the stuttering sound came back again . I tried restarting several time , and the stuttering sound would appear in variies length of time after the system being booted.

the only way to significantely reduce the frequency of the stuttering sound showing up was to turn off the system , let it cool off and then turn it back on.

Had the same problem but fixed it!

I had the same problem for a while but then I got every possible update from the windows update site and now my sound is fine even at max volume. So try a complete windows update, critical, software and hardware.

Sorry that didn't work . I've exhaulsted all possible updates and still able to produce that choppy sound . I turned on the mp3 play some music and turn on a browser to surf the net . In 10 minutes after the reboot . Choppy sounds came . I believe this problem is consistant enough to produce now and i'm goning to take it up to Acer repair one more time.

Get some headphones or new speakers. I had the same problem but found that it's only with the crappy factory speakers.

Well, first, it's not the speakers. The same problem happens when plugged into external speakers or headphones.

Second, the sound quality isn't "poor" as in bad speaker quality, it's downright incorrect. It stutters and chops heavily and simply must be fixed.

I've sent it back to them for the second time and they are assuring me if they can't reproduce the problem, they will call.

I'll post back with the results.

Ok , Acer tech support has determined that my choppy audio problem is due to my hard-drive being serverly fragmented . Try defragment your hard drive and see if the problem still presist . Good luck

So far , for my case , the choppy sounds hasn't reappear after i defragmented my hard drive. I hope this problem is really solved .

That's the strangest thing i've ever heard...

At least your problem is fixed though.

A temp for you battlefield 2 choppyness

I had the choppyness problem on battlefield 2. I am currently using patch 1.3. Until a true fix is found, change sound to software mode and uncheck EAX. Software seems to fully resolve the choppy sound. Unchecking EAX will resovle an issue with loud garbled sounds when starting the game (if that becomes a problem). Try that out. As for media player choppyness, I use winamp and have had no problems yet. Good luck :-)

has anyone else had the problem with stuttering video and audio with Battlefield 2 on there Acer 5672 with X1600. It only stutters with Eax on and Hardware audio decoding on. Just wondering if anyone has figured out the issue.

Hi guys,

This problem has occured with my 5672.

Last night, totally out of the blue, the sound went exactly like described already in this thread.

Action I have already taken:
a) defragmented hard drive - no luck with fixing problem
b) downloading new audio drivers from Acer website - no luck with fixing problem

Occasionally, when the CPU load is light the sound may play for 3 or 4 seconds without going crazy, then, when I open up MSN to sign in for example, it goes off on one again.

This cannot go on! I've had my laptop 3 months, so it's thankfully still under warranty.. but I would much rather get it sorted now than send it in and be without my laptop for 10/15 days.

Stupid Acer.

What are my options? I'm really lost and p*ssed off!
