Aspire 5672 Audio Problem (Choppy) - Page 2

Have you upgraded any other drivers recently? Sometimes the GPU drivers would make the sound get skippy.
Also when you start noticing the sound skipping, check your open processes and see if any that are using a decent amount of cpu power. I actually found out for myself. When I installed the realtech drivers (from realtech website), thats when I started to get the skipping. For me I just system restored a bit before the noticed incident (hopefully you havent done to much important if you go that route) and it seemed to resolve my problem. Ofcourse I still have skipping in Battlefield 2, but I turned off EAX and was fine.
Also some people enjoy messing with the built in equalizer in the realtech software. Well I noticed that when I increased the bass settings (the really low frequency sliders) I would cut up a bit. I have a feeling thats not your porblem though. I would just check to see if you equalizer is off. Just a chance that may be it.

What is EAX?

The equiliser is off, lol..

Hmm, when the problem occurs the biggest processes are only Firefox, MSN and explorer.exe..

Oh and svchost.exe whatever that is..

Dont worry about EAX, that wouldn't be your problem unless your playing Battlefield 2. Does is skip when just restarted windows and your just listning to music?

Also, I'm not worried about the size of the programs in your process list, just do you see any of them taking CPU cycles constantly?

If it doesn't skip in the begining, what program starts the stuttering? Is is firefox, MSN or just when you got alot of stuff going on?

**or you could try installing the new 1.47 HD audio drivers from Realtek's site. That's what alot of people do. Looks like the Acer website release is package 1.36, so 1.47 may be better or the most up-to-date. Ehh, its worth the try?

As for mine, I have the original acer drivers. If you press the info button in the realtek settings you can get you driver version. Mine is 5.10.00.5242. Unfortunatly I dont know what driver package that is, but it seems old. It does not skip though. I would recommend trying the 1.47 package. Uninstall the ones on your laptop first.
Good luck.

Acer Travelmate 4200 Choppy TOO.. No Battle games here

I am having similar distorted sound problems. Seems to get progressively worse the longer or more often screensaver is activated. Restart cleans it until screensaver kicks in several times and worsens it again. In an attempt to fix problem I got newest Realtek drivers last week. Have not tried defrag or turning off hardware accel.

WinXP fully patched/SP'd
Acer TravelMate 4200
Sound Driver: Realtek Semiconductor Corp.
Driver Date: 11/3/2006
Driver Rev: 5.10.0.5319

Started happening about 2 months ago. Around the same time I installed an HP Photoseries 3200 Printer/Scanner, although I can't necessarily specifically correlate. Sometimes when shuttingdown/restarting, I get a cannot end some HPxxxtrac or something program.

Scanned with Spybot, Adaware and Avast AV last week, all clean. Running ZoneAlarm Firewall.

TIA,

jpf

Have you checked that your HD is using DMA transfer mode and not PIO?
Ive seen a few cases where the hard drive drops to pio mode and this causes the same problems you are seeing. Check in the hardware settings of your primary ide chanel ( under ide ata/atapi controllers) and if it's reporting pio mode just uninstall the primary ide channel and reboot.

Checked DMA/PIO .. said that current transfer was DMA...I had Realtek HD "disabled" all day (actually about 18 hours)...after just enabling it, the sound is fubar .. which means that it doesn't degrade b/c of the Realtek stuff since it was turned off all day. On another point, video seems to also slow down exactly like the sound. For example, watching something at google.com/video it all fubar. Even after it fully loads. And I should point out that the sound sounds much more "slow-motion" than it does "choppy" or perhaps somewhere in the middle of the two. Thanks for your reply, it does not seem to be DMA/PIO.

Well I did some more fiddling .. maybe I have more infomation .. while watching "PS3 vs Wii" on google.com/video....(several dozen times by hitting "Play Again")

I turned off ZoneAlarm Firewall, Avast AV... no help

I killed HPZipm12.exe (HP MFC 3200 Process (CPU Hog)) .. no help

I set up a few "ping -L 1400" to push a few bits thru internet .. no change for worse ..

It seems that when I hit a "refresh" in a different
Firefox window a process floats to the top called "System" that chomps away at the CPU while simultaneously screwing with the sound/video playback.

So the sound/video problems are CPU related and NOT disk related. (Have "Performace" set to "optimize for programs" (had it it set for "optimize for background processes..no difference)) Page File = 1600MB, Memory Usage optimized to "Programs"

If I learn more, I will report ..

I may have just solved my problem .. it turns out the the "System" (NOT System Idle) process was grabbing more and more CPU as the laptop stayed booted...I downloaded "Process Explorer" (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sys...sExplorer.mspx) and found that "vsdatant.sys" was the offending process. I then followed instructions here (http://www.mcse.ms/message863359.html) AND here (http://www.tek-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=396426) .. (please note that in that last link the directory should be c:\windows\internet logs) ..

My tvXXXX.log had grown to 24MB. I had a total of 360 files in the directory. I had to switch to "Safe Mode" in order to delete some of them.

FYI, this seems related to ZoneAlarm, but I noticed that perhaps some other programs use the TrueVector engine. Once I performed the above steps, my ZoneAlarm had to relearn all of it's exceptions and some re-configuring had to be performed.

YMMV...please post your experiences.

They sat on it for 16 days before i got it back. They replaced the motherboard (or so they say). They kept my original packaging i sent it in, and put 3 nice large scratches on the laptop lid. Beware of Acer support!!

Edit: I even formatted in addition to reinstalling drivers. It is not a software issue (not in my case).

hey man could i get some pics of your scratches?
i sent mine in as soon as i got it cause it came with majors manufacturing errors (screen frame unglued, battery lock would lock, touchpad loose.) and they sent it back with 3 friken scratches under the touchpad that they wouldnt fix cause they said i had done it. i sent them pics of the laptop right b4 sending it in and still didnt beleive me. i hate acer support since then. now im having major pbs with my screen (big blue line down the middle) ill post a pic of it when i get back from my poker game.
as for the sound pb i dunno what it could be, i dont have it. but i do have a pb when i touch my touchpad, the speakers get this static sound.

Hi I dont want to interrrupt this conversation but I also have sound problems with the Realtek HD soundcard. Especially with recording, using Cubase and Cool Edit with my 5612 acer. The sound is distorted and crappy at playback.
any ideas on how to fix this
Thanx!

i think i have solved my problems... i unistalled ZoneAlarm completely via DOS with a /clean option which removed the entirety of the TrueVector stuff... i have not had a problem since removal of the TrueVector engine, even though you might not have ZoneAlram, you may have truevector engine stuff. Look for vsdatant.sys or vsmon.exe.

Hey buddy, i have exactly the same prob but with a aspire 9804. Until now i didn't found a solution and various drivers or better the combination of those are the source. The acer support sends me an email with the question to wait some time because they try to solve it. BTW --> i tried soooooo many things, new installation with xp, new installation with vista, bios with raid, bios without raid. original acer driver, realtek driver. I guess it's not the specific aspire 5672 - it's a general issue. Greetings from sunny Greece, Pete

Second, the sound quality isn't "poor" as in bad speaker quality, it's downright incorrect. It stutters and chops heavily and simply must be fixed.

I've sent it back to them for the second time and they are assuring me if they can't reproduce the problem, they will call.

I'll post back with the results.
I had the same issue a while back with this Aspire 5601 and fixed it. This is not a software or driver issue. It is an issue with one of the other components installed on the computer which must be disabled. I can't remember which one it is, but there was a post on another site a while back that fixed it. I am still looking for that post and will post the fix as soon as I find it.

hi, basically there is a problem with the sound on the notebook which is an Acer Aspire 5612ZWLMi. when ever i am playing any sounds either mp3, dvd or even start up there is random coppy distortion to the sound that comes and goes, which is annoying. its not the software i use to play them, the laptop has all the needed drivers so there shouldnt be a problem. please help. this sound only persits when using windows xp rather than the vista disc that came with the notebook. i got told by acer before to go into the audio settings and switch off the mic boost then this should stop the buzzing, but i did this and it did not do anything.

i have a genuine version of windows xp and would perfer to use that on my laptop than vista and this sound problem is stopping me doing this, can you help...

thanks

Uninstall the primary IDE driver and let windows reinstall it. I did this and it worked for my Aspire 5601 using XP.
