Maximum Notebook Size for Traveling?

Greetings,

I’m considering a new Dell Latitude notebook with either a 14.1” screen-size (HWD 1.26” x 13.27” x 9.37”) … or a 15.4” screen-size (HWD 1.6” x 14.2” x 10.4”).

I’m undecided about the overall size of such a unit when traveling via air or even by Greyhound bus.

What space considerations should I keep in mind in this regard?

I manage a 15.4" that's bigger than that (probably 2" high) on airplanes without a problem.

My dad has a 14.1" screen, I dont think I would travel with anything bigger, but then again I havent used a 15" since they were 4:3.. so I really have nothing to compare it to.

the W3J is probably the best compromise for potability and power 14" + x1600

I've traveled quite extensively with an HP zd7000 (17" widescreen) and, at least for me, it was a huge pain in the rear. That beast died, so I now have an Acer 8204 and that's much better. I'd say a 15/15.4" would be the most and that's pushing the limits of comfort.

I travel with my I6000 a few times it is not to bad but it is still heavy.

I travelled with the i6000 in coach (plane) and it barely fit on the tray table. I would get something more manageable. The biggest I would recommend would be a 14.1" preferably widescreen. A bus would even be worse. Be careful travelling on the bus with a laptop unless you want it taken away by force (depending upon the region of the country you are in, of course).

On the train, the i6000 was good and manageable.

My 15,4" notebook barely fits on the airplane tables (coach class, of course ), and I like mice, so I need the other table free if I'm going to use it. About the weight, it's heavy to carry around and be confortable... keep in mind that I'm 20 with reasonable physical capacity.

I never use bus or train, so I don't know. You would only use notebooks on a bus here if you're crazy (think: robbery ), and in my city there are no trains/subways.

My next notebook will be a widescreen, not bigger than 14.1", for sure (13" wide would be ideal).

I have a 15.4" ZT3000 HP and a 12" 700M dell.

They are both good and small/light for their size notebooks, but.....

The 12" is much more manageable and can be more comfortablly and quickly used and it does not push into your neighbors space.

My vote is for a widescreen 12". You have to scroll a little bit to see things but oh well!

15.4" is too big IMO. I had a dell 15.4" widescreen. Way too heavy to carry around and unwiedly on airplanes. It was so big, i didn't even take it out on airplanes.

I have a 14" notebook for work, which is much much easier to carry around and use. I would like to try a 12", but have not had the opportunity to use one for an extensive period of time.

My personal opinion on limits of portability is 14" widescreen at 5 lbs or less.
If on airplanes a lot, the smaller the better.

I pitched my 15.4" 8 lb. laptop for a 14.1" 5lb. laptop because of travel. I am a big guy (~6'1" @ 250 lbs) and traveling in coach made it impossible to use that laptop. I have yet to travel with the new machine but I shoud fare better if for no reason other than the shorter profile with the screen up.

I fit my I6000 on the plane fine on trains it fits good but coaches no not enough room.

I find the 14" screens (both the wide and the regular aspect versions) to be the perfect balance between portability and regular use. By regular use I mean sitting hours a day in front of it working/surfing or whatever. Anything smaller becomes uncomfortable to work on for extended periods and anything bigger becomes bulky.

There's still the 13.3 inch option too. Maybe you should look at the Sony SZ series.
