Just thought l would quickly write about the Acer Aspire 5021WLMi which l just recently bought from acer notebooks (erm try 8 mths ago lol).

This is the first ever laptop l have purchased, as l am a committed desktop user, however due to the fact l will be travelling a lot over the next few years decided, I to get my hands on one for general gaming and multimedia.

The Acer Aspire 5021 was not my first choice as l really fancied getting my hands on the Acer Aspire 5014WMLi however these seemed a little like scotched mist.

So opted for this little monster, well l can say that l am most impressed with this bit of kit, l must admit however, that when l first opened the box it stuck me as some what less than robust and a little on the plastic side, but this is only due to the fact that l have used desktops since my introduction to computers.

Once opened and up and running the 5021 is a great bit of kit, next to my desktop it is silent and even when running under load the fan is very quiet, the display is crystal clear and a lot larger than l imagined it would be also it has a great viewing angle, the keyboard to me seems more than fine and more than robust enough for keyboard bashing during a first person shooter, the touch pad is accurate and not too sensitive, however the “mouse” buttons don’t strike me as the best, this matters little to myself as l will be getting my hands on a optical usb mouse.

Now l bought this laptop to be used for gaming and watching dvd’s, as yet l have not played any games on it however l have bench marked it using 3Dmark2001SE, 2003(303), 2005 & 2006 as well as aquamark3 and ran the same bench marks on my desktop.

Acer Aspire 5021(512MB of RAM)

3Dmark2001SE 14,424
3Dmark2003(303) 5,023
3Dmark2005 2032
3Dmark2006 670
Aquamark3 N/A

Acer Aspire 5021(2GB of RAM)

3Dmark2001SE 14,579
3Dmark2003(303) 5,044
3Dmark2005 2161
3Dmark2006 574
Aquamark3 39,156

Desktop

3Dmark2001SE 16,147
3Dmark2003(303) 5,815
3Dmark2005 2703
3Dmark2006 806
Aquamark3 42,199

Looking at these results shows that of course my desktop is the faster, however watching the two running the benchmarks l could see very little difference between the laptop and desktop. However having spent a few months playing with laptop l have updated the graphics drivers wich may account for the differing benchmarks from previous. However still more than impressed with the laptop.

Desktop configuration:

Mobo: Asus A7N8X
Proc: AMD XP 2800+
Graphics: Saphire 9800 Pro 128MB 256bit
Sound: SoundBlaster live 24bit
Ram: 2Gig dual channel 333
HDD’s: 40Gig system 200Gig storage
OS: XP Pro sp2

(Only one niggle, when l first got the laptop l had a pioneer DVD-RE K04RA fitted which ran like a dream, then the slot cover came off, so sent it back to acer for repair, came back with a Matshita UJ-845D fitted, possible the slowest dvd burner ever devised by man, as initially my laptop could outburn my desktop (taking less than half the time to burn a dvd) however now it takes double the time to do the same task compared to my desktop, apart from that happy with it)
