Questions on the Gateway 505X(L)

Hello all,

I'm looking at the Gateway 505X or XL and I've got a couple questions that I can't find answers for:

1) Regarding the multi-media buttons on the left-hand side of the keyboard: Can anyone get them to work with anything aside from WinDVD and Windows Media Player? If so, how? How about using them in Linux?

2) Has anyone been able to get a rebate on the XL model? If so, where? How much?

3) Has anyone compared the 505X or XL to a Asus M6000N side by side? If so, what were your impressions.

Rant:

I went to my local Gateway Country store and walked away un-impressed. The sales guy I got couldn't answer any of my questions. In fact, I would say he didn't really try at all to make a sale, and I made it quite clear that I could potentially purchase a laptop right then and there. IMHO, I had a better experience at OfficeMax when I looked there several weeks ago.

Sheesh!

1) Someone else will have to answer this question. I haven't played around enough with these buttons to respond.

2) Since the product launch, Gateway has offered the M505XL at prices ranging from $1699 to $1999. You can also get discounts based on organizations you belong to such as the 10% discount given to AAA members. As far as I know, there have never been any mail-in rebates on the M505XL.

3) The ASUS M6000N is brand new to the United States and the Gateway M505 is not offered in Europe (where the M6000N was released earlier). If you can find someone in the U.S who has actually received an ASUS M6000N, they may be able to give you a comparison. You may want to post a question in the general forum asking "Has anyone in the U.S received an ASUS M6000N yet?" or something like that.

Rant) I have had mixed experiences with the salespeople at my local Gateway Country store as well. The store manager and sales manager are both excellent. There is also one senior salesman who is very good: technically competent and willing to find out answers to questions that he doesn't know. The other salespeople seem to be more or less order takers with limited knowledge.

Edit: Amazon.com offered a rebate on the M505XL at one time, but only to bring their price down to Gateway's discounted price.
