Well i have a compaq r3000 notebook. The lcd will flicker a few minutes after boot then the computer will freeze and i will have to reboot.... when i boot back up it will usually come on black. i tried taking the notebook apart to put as5 on the vid card and cpu but i couldnt get to the vid card, only the cpu. i know that its not a software issue, or HD issue if that helps. when the lcd flickers, weird lines come up of ALL diff colors. my guess was the vid card or inverter plz help me out. Dont want to have to scrap the computer it was very fast for the past 2 years.

Well, the flicker would normally be the inverter. But the lines are definitely not.
The freezing and lines and the flicker, indicate to me that it is probably the system board. Since the videocard has a 99.999999% of being built into it.
I've seen the system board take out the inverter.. ok, I've seen many a system board take out many an inverter. So it is possible to be both.

what part on the board do you think is the problem is then?

heh well the videocard of course. The chips are part of the board.

R-3000's and the twin ZX/ZV systemboards are all the same w/integrated video chipsets. (Onboard).. The fact you are getting freezeups, No video on reboot, And line is a good indication of the Video chip failing or a BGA pad releasing under heat. Systemboard swap time if you cant narror down to the LCD cable itself. Ever get a BSOD? And auto reboot? We can install a board in this model for 329.00 done and shipped back if you cant get it resolved. Is this a P-4 chipset or Athlon?

no offense but 329 is a rip just for a bord swap. its a athlon. someone on ebay fixes them for 149.99 i think ill try that. thanks anyways

Ripoff?? Ever check the price of these boards? Doubt very much theyll repair for 149.00 And I'd suggest asking if they do BGA rework prior to sending in..(Not offended).. If they dont do BGA and it turns out to be a Vid chip issue their cost will be more than the 329.00. Hope you get it straightened out.

what is a bga?
BGA = Ball Grid Array.. Its the terminology for the mounting style for various types of chipsets. Getttting the chips offff isnt the big issue, Repairing a trace to a pad for an individual ball mount and keeping it in place for the reinstallation is the kicker.
