F.E.A.R dominating on my m1710?

Ok not dominating but

I can't run it at max setting with my 7900gtx. It is unplayable. Super glitchy. I thought the 7900gtx with its 512 mb would kill even F.E.A.R. What gives. I am running it at medium right now but I could do that on my 2 year old desktop.

m1710 specs
2.0ghz
1 gb ram
7900gtx

1 gig of ram may be the cause. It generally uses more than a gig of ram

Not sure, I know some guys require a TON of RAM (BF2 loves 2GB)...

Thats the only thing I can see limiting your system. With a brand new system like that, top of the line I'd want to crank it up too!

Add another gig of RAM and you should see some improvement. But dont feel too bad even some SLI systems have difficulty getting over 60FPS with everything cranked up at 1920x1200. Jus do a google search for SLI setup benchmarks of F.E.A.R. and youll c. Its a very GPU and CPU intensive game years ahead of its time. The G80 should eat it bcuz it will be a newer generation card with DX10.

and bf2 special forces.. it's super glitchy while bf2 is good. Does bf2 special forces require more then bf2?

I dunno if this related but I have a m170 2ghz 2gb (recently upgraded) 7800 gtx
I have trouble running F.E.A.R. as well as BF2 at high setting on any resolution. I too thought having 1 gb of ram at the time was the problem so I upgraded to 2gb but still no difference. I know my system doesnt even compare to yours but the funny thing is people with the same specs as me have no problems with BF2 especially. My average 3d05 scores were way below average. So i think its hardware related. Have you tried to benchmark your system and compare with other scores with the same specs??? Let me know how that goes

I have an M170 with the 7800GTX and demo kicked a$$ at most of the settings maxed out at navtive res.

Hmm... Seems like a huge variation in performance of the same systems - thats odd?

Benchmark the system, and report back - that'll clear alot up

Good luck!

Id be surpised if any system could run FEAR at 60FPS with 1920x1200 res. One setting that helps is to TURN OF SOFTSHADOWS. This setting alone eats about 25% of system performance.

That's one of two or so settings that I had turned down.

What drivers are you running and did you do a reformat getting rid of the Dell junk?
84.12 had some FEAR optimizations. I recommend 84.56 personally.

All the more reason to get an E1705/9400 with it's lower resolution WXGA display so you can run games at a reasonable native resolution. When the 7900 Go GTX is in stock, the E1705's that have WXGA panels will be kicking FEAR's ass. I don't understand why Dell doesn't let M1710 users pick WXGA displays...

Don't make him feel bad about his purchase, he's got a great system. We all know you got a E1705 on the way with the discounts.

It wasn't my intention to make him or anyone else feel bad. I just find it strange that Dell chooses not to give people that are paying $3k for a laptop the option to pick if they want WUXGA or WXGA displays. If I was an M1710 owner I'd probably try to find a 9400 owner with a WXGA screen and try to trade them. You don't get a glossy screen but that can be remedied with nushield.

I downloaded a demo just to test it out

Runs great at native resolution with 2xAA and soft shadows off. Everything else is maxed out. Getting 28-45 FPS.

XPS Gen 2, 7800GTX OCed to 430/1100. 2 Gbs of RAM

I find FEAR incrediable on my M1710 im runing 1920 X 1200 with 2Xaa and 4XAF soft shadows off everything else maxed. And never go below 30 most of the time 40 to 60 FPS smooth gameplay. Im runing the latest G-force/TNT drivers from nVidias site 84.21. This maching temp has never exceeded 84 I use the temp logger.

NOTE at one time i had the X-tream g drivers installed and my Idel temp went up 10 degrees from 60 to 70 and suffered a huge loss in 05 bench got like 6600 rolled the drivers back and temp went back down to 60 and bench back up to 8451

Are you running fear at 1920x1200? Could you please post your settings? Like 4xAA and 16XAF, soft shadows on, everything on max etc.

Thank you!

I personally don't care for WXGA. I run fear maxxed out, but I do have 2 gig and the game plays perfect. I also reformatted the laptop and got rid of all Dell's bloatware..
