Screen Survey for those who have the E1405 / 640M

Here's a quick survey for those who have already received their E1405 / 640M. Hopefully this will tell us what to expect from each manufacturer, and what we should all hope to be receiving.

1. Which screen option did you go with?
(WXGA or WXGA+ Ultrasharp w/ Truelife?)

2. Who is the manufacturer of your LCD?
(AUO - ? , SEC - Samsung, QDS - Quanta)

3. Comment on your screen.
(Quality, Colors, Light Leakage, Sparkle Effect, etc.)
1. WXGA+ TrueLife "UltraSharp"
2. AUO1247
3. Washed out colors, light leakage, sparkle, bad viewing angles
post #3 of 54
1. WXGA+ TrueLife

2. Don't know yet because the Dell Original Configuration Website is not accepting my service tag. They are working on fixing it.

3. I agree with the previous (washed out colors, light leakage, sparkle, bad viewing angles) although to put in perspective in my opinion it is no worse than the M140 I had with Quanta Screen.

Other than my old 710m, I've never seen a Dell screen with true life that didn't have sparkle and light leak. Light leak you can fight with the vertical tilt of the screen although the narrow viewing angles don't give you much flexibility. Sparkle, I think it is becoming to be a choice nowadays a) glossy TL w sparkle or b) give up the TL and get rid of the sparkle.

I also reported to Dell that the sparkle issue they had on the M140 is still on the e1405 and they are shipping me (out of their own suggestion) a new screen to test. Not sure it'll do anything but I'll try it. I'm keeping it anyway. This machine is the optimal performance/size for me.

What I do to test sparkle is: Open Accessories\Paint and paint all the screen with the bright green.

1. WXGA+ TrueLife (it said Ultrasharp on configuration, but not on the order page)
2. AUO1247
3. Sparkle and light leakage dont bother me as much as the bad viewing angles. This is obviously not an ultrasharp screen. But it is crystal clear to my eyes, and video looks fluid.

M140 Quanta vs. AUO WXGA+ . To those that have had both: Is the rez increase of the WXGA+ outweigh the display's inferior contrast/sparklies? Reason I'm asking is that I have the opportunity to swap my incoming E1405 screen for the M140 as I'm giving my M140 to my GF.

Coming from an inferior Samsung TrueLife screen on the 630m (M140), I would say the AUO TrueLife on the E1405 is slightly better than the 630m... In my case the extra screen real estate and slightly better screen is worth it for me.

Nobrainer. Whatever screen you choose keep the e1405; it is a much faster laptop. I'd say put both side to side and if you like the M140 screen better do two things a) swap them and give the M140 with the e1405 screen away and b) let us know.

Okay, so far we can deduce that...

1. The sparkle effect & leakage is almost guranteed with a Truelife screen.
2. Just about all the Truelife LCD's are manufactured by AOU
3. The AUO Truelife LCD on the E1405 is still slightly better than the M140's samsung. (This is KIND OF a relief for those who've had the Samsung on the M140, b/c we know that we probably won't get a WORSE screen)

Additoinal Questions:

1. For those who've had the M140/630M, how are the viewing angles in comparison to the E1405? Better, Worse or Same?

That's pretty much it for now, hopefully we'll get some people with the matte screen to reply... Keep the posts coming in!

I'll take pics of my Quanta M140 and my incoming E1405 AUO (presumed) side-by-side when I get them.

Thanks magbarn,

The viewing angles of the AUO "UltraSharp" TrueLife of the E1405 is about the same as the viewing angles of the non-UltraSharp TrueLife display on the 630m (M140) Samsung screen I own, that is why I am baffled by Dell labeling this AUO screen as UltraSharp when that label denotes better viewing angles.

It's weird because on my part number on the order sheet it indicates AUO, however Powerstripe gives me the part as being a Samsung:

1) WXGA+ Truelife (1440X900)
2) SEC4457
3) Seems too bright, much like my 2005FPW was at first. Stuck pixel in bottom left, light leakage from below on movies. Viewing angles suck nuts compared to 2005

Using Powerstripe, i just adjusted it now it appears very good for applications, however light leakage remains when watching movies. Preferred over T40 screen for applications, sharper, higher resolution.

If anybody's screen is as bright as mine, i strongly suggest getting a program to adjust gamma, contrast, etc. since the crappy integrated card software doesnt allow you to do that.

my quanta screen on my M140 is way better, no sparkles, better viewing angles than the auo wxga+ on my e1405, but the e1405's white colors are more "whiter" than the Quanta.

Try Powerstripe. Took me a while, but i made it liveable and gave up trying to get it to look like the 2005FPW. In fact from what i've seen on th 710m, it still couldn't match the 2005, despite what people were saying about it having an amazing screen... Better than the E1405 though.

I think me and one other guy are the only ones with Samsung displays. He said his looks good, (in another thread). Was the really bad Samsungs the XGA ones in th 630m?

I got the Samsung screen on my m140...coming from a 2005fpw, i thought it sucked at first, but got used to it.

Recently got a AUO on my e1405 wxgs+ trulife. Viewing angle sucks just as much as the samsung. But the screen is brighter, and the whites are whiter. However, there's more of the sparkle effect. Over it's a better screen than the samsung.

My question is...how does this compare to the Quanta on the m140?

For me, viewing angle is the biggest concern, is the viewing angle on the m140 Quanta just as good as the one on the m710? because the viewing angle on the m710 is soooo much better than the ones on my m140 and e1405.

Get Powerstripe to tell. Mine said AUO on the packing slip, but i got a Samsung. I thought the Samsungs from the 630m were WXGA? That would mean that the Samsung in the 640m is different. Seems as though the general consensus is that the Quanta is the best screen, however i believe that too is only WXGA?

I'll receive a new scren today. The Dell rep is certain I won't see a problem with this one. I'd give it a 0.001% chance he is right but since he insisted I'll give it a try.
