Screen Survey for those who have the E1405 / 640M - Page 2

I've had very positive results with the screen on my e1405. I received it a few days ago and I'm very happy with it. The screen is (surprisingly) very comparable to my 700m with no adjustments and MUCH better than the m140 I returned. The colors aren't washed out, the whites are white and the higher resolution of the WXGA+ made all the difference. The viewing angles are still a bit slim buts its acceptable. Definitely worth the $70 more I paid for it than the m140 (ewww).

I had the 700m too and the screen I have on the e1405 does not compare. Maybe they do have different brands/models and the Dell rep is bringing a better one today. Upgraded chances to 0.002%.

What model did you get? (Find via powerstrip)
Don't have powerstrip but I have the part in my hand:

Samsung LTN141WD-L01.

They didn't send me the instructions to swap it though... always missing something.

well after couple of days using the WXGA+ screen I think i've "adjusted" so its a very good screen, not compared to the 2005 or the 700m, lol

Powerstrip is showing SEC4457.

Ok. I just replaced the AUO by the Samsung. At first glance it looks better although not having them side to side makes very diffucult to compare them. Anyone in the Alpharetta, GA area?

V Angles seem better, light leak from the bottom looks more concentrated towards the center rather than even across, sparkle still there but pattern may be less annoying. Need more time to judge...

V angles are definitely better. I can turn the screen 45 degrees away from the normal (0 degrees) and still get good pixel projection without fading or color reversing.

Hope I helped...

Hmm looks like SEC is the best WXGA+ for now. I wonder if Quanta makes a WXGA+ screen?

I am trying to be objective with my observations but please don't take them as an absolute until more people confirm. If someone lived in the Alpharetta, GA area I could put both side to side and tell for sure.

Xarthan, how did you adjust the screen?
You use the laptop for about a week and don't look at any other screen that might be better. After awhile you will "adjust" psychologicaly of course

I'm going to ask dell to send me a samsung screen and see how it is.

Are there sparkles with the samsung? I think someone said there are, and the only benefit with the samsung is just better viewing angles?
I agree. After 3-4 days the screen looks much better. Kinda like a girlfriend effect.

If you haven't asked Dell for the Samsung, you probably shouldn't. You'll swap them back and forth 20 times without being able to make your mind.

I think sparkles are very similar. Of course they both bothered me little to none after 1 week of usage.

I kept the Samsung but for no other reason that that I had to make a decision. I run a high res slide show on both and I thought the Samsung was sharper on some shadow points. When I put the AUO back to double check they looked the same.

Main difference being weight you'll have a hard time deciding (don't put the screws back on after you swap them as you'll change them several times). Make sure to seat the connector under the keyboard all the way or you'll be creating an induced light leak.

This machine is definitely a keeper. The savings in size on the M1210 with battery and all is much less that the proportional loss in screen size. Putting my mind to rest today.

Good luck and let me know how it goes.

Mines an SEC4457. I don't fully understand the sparkle, but I probably have some and it doesnt really bother me. Viewing angles are just fine... as long as you're not in a room that the gloss screen would reflect everything. Theres definatly some light leakage on the bottom, its about an inch high and covers from side to side. The top left corner has some leakage too.

Overall I'm pretty happy with the laptop and what I paid for it, the little bit of play in the lid when its closed bothers me though.

to really see the sparkles you need to have another screen without sparkles next to it
post #36 of 54
Sparkles: Open Paint, fill the bitmap with the bright green color and move the paint app around. you'll see the layer of sparkles added by the coating.

got my e1405 a few days ago, but cuz of a crazy final exam schedule didnt get to take a look until today. note: that this was an upgrade to my 700m....

i have the the AUO1247 TrueLife screen and........ IT IS SOOOOOOOOO BAD!!! wow how can anyone put up with it. i know i know, i've probably been spoiled by the amazing 700m screen (AUO0c02), but seriously the viewing angles, sparkle, and light leakage are unbearable. i really had no idea what you guys meant by sparkle when i read this thread before.... that is until i turned on my e1405. absolutely piss poor quality. i want to ask for the samsung screen but it doesnt sound like that's much better either.

should i just return it and keep my 700m? the quality is really almost too bad to bear. do you guys think the normal WXGA matte screen will be any better? don't want to have to give up resolution just for a decent screen either...

Well i'll tell you that the 640's screen will never be as good as the 700/710m's because of viewing angle. I wasn't overly impressed by the 710m either though to be quite honest after hearing how people raved about it. The normal matte screen on the 630m that seemed to be the best was the Quanta display.

I have the Samsung and it's ok, but definately not the greatest, the angles blow, but the colors are ok after applying powerstripe. I don't know how you could use that, or almost any Dell LCD without adjusting the color/brightness/contrast somewhat.

Anyone know if the e1505 or 1705 are plagued with the same problems the e1405 has? Just curious
