Best 24" 1920 x 1200 LCD Monitor for the Money?

Ever since I read about Dell's 24" widescreen LCD for under $1000 I've been interested in getting one. I have a 19" Sony LCD right now that I bought just a few months before reading about the forementioned Dell. There is absolutely nothing wrong with my 19". But I'd like to have something bigger. Had I known I could have bought a 24" widescreen for less than $1000 I would have waited.

I've been looking on newegg and they have an Acer model, AL2416Wd, that is getting very good reviews and is even cheaper than the Dell. How does this one compare to the Dell? Newegg's dead pixel policy (returns on only 8+) does raise some concern. Even one would bother me. Or has the whole dead pixel problem all but disappeared now, with the newer manufacturing techniques?

Are there any other similar models (24", 1920 x 1200) that can be had in this price range that will perform well? Anything on the horizon that I should hold off for? This will be connected to my Dell Inspiron XPS Gen 2 in my home office, and gaming performance is paramount.

I can almost taste Half-Life 2 in 1920 x 1200 on a big 24" LCD. This is gonna be cool.

I don't have either one either, but have researched them a bit as I would also like to get a 24" WUXGA LCD sometime in the near future. After reading the specs on both the Dell and the Acer I think I'd still take the Dell 2405 instead. If you wait until just a mediocre coupon comes out, you can get the 2405 for $750; and a lot of times it can be had for less.

They both obviously are 24", WUXGA, both have a DVI port. As far as dead pixels go, I've never had a problem getting Dell to replace a screen that I've had for whatever reason; even if it is just for light leakage. If you aren't happy with it just tell them that you want a replacement or you are going to return it and they will 9 times out of 10 send you a new screen. One thing that I noticed about the Acer is that it doesn't have the USB ports or the media card reader (at least it wasn't listed in Newegg's spec sheet). This sounds like something you wouldn't use much, but the ability for the monitor to act as a USB hub is very nice; as you can just leave some stuff plugged into it so when you plug in your notebook you don't have to plug in all that extra stuff.

Thank you for your comments. I am leaning towards the Dell.

Just got my 2405 a couple of weeks ago. All I can say is - awesome. This is the piece that I've been missing all this time. I haven't had the chance to tweak it yet, but as it is (stock) , I do not have any complaints. No dead pixels, no light leakage, black looks like black, it's beautiful. Use it primarily for gaming. Got tired of looking at my viewsonic 19 inch lcd square thing.

This is highly recommended - by me.

Got it from Dell SB for 699 plus tax (with a 30% off coupon).

I have two of the Dells (unfortunately not side by side as I have separate needs for them right now.. but once I move...). You won't be disappointed if you get one. They're excellent.

Also the Acer is $750 but you have to pay extra for the warranty. I think Dell comes standard with a 3 year warranty (if not 3, then 2... pretty sure it's three tho).

EDIT: You can watch HDTV on the Dell too, it has the inputs for an HD receiver, not sure about the Acer. The Dell also has PiP, PbP and the ability to put the PiP anywhere in the screen and adjust it's size. I get work done while having the Red Sox game, in high def, on in the corner of my screen.

It sounds like for the prices you are mentioning your in Australia? I dunno but my mate bought a 24" 1920 x 1200 monitor from Office Works for $550 and it's a BenQ.

It's very nice and i've been able to compare it to the Acer and i would the BenQ any day.

You're looking at a 2 year old thread is why the prices look off.
