T41p vs T43

I came across two cases:
1. Local sale of T41p which is: Pentium M 730 1.7GHz, 512 MB RAM, 60 GB 7200 rpm HDD, 14.1" 1400x1050 TFT driven by FiireGL T2 graphics covered by 1 year IBM wararnty (international). Two additional years of wararnty can be purchased on top of its current price, but the service my third-party lab related to teh shop or the improter.
or
2. T43 off Ebay from Thinkpadworld seller: Pentium M745 1.8 Ghz, 1 GB RAM, same TFT but driven by ATI Radeon 9600 covered by IBM Global 6 months Financing warranty + 3-years Mack extended international warranty.

Both are under IBM "refubrished" claim, to be considered as like new and sold being packaged and stuffed as new.
There are also available similar T43 from teh same Ebay seller with the same spec except that with ATI x300 graphics for about the same ballpark.

At the end, both choices are similarily priced (bringing over this T43 to Israel in total is as much as the T41p locally).

What do you say ?

T43 would be an x300, most likely. The T42 had the 9600 as an option though.

As it is...the T41P is a great laptop, but the T43 would be faster.

Thanks for the opinion.
Oddly enough, the T41p isn't mentioned in the tabook...weird..
Would the speed difference be noticeable, say mostly in technical computing ? (I'm not a gamer)

That's because the T41P came out in 2003. I bought one in May 2004, and returned it within 2 weeks for a T42P.

They're actually pretty comparable speed wise.
The T43 will be a bit faster than the T41P as:
1. 1.8ghz vs 1.7ghz
2. Dothan has 2mb L2 cache, Banias has 1mb
3. 1gb RAM vs 512mb RAM

The T41P has a 7200rpm hdd, which is its only advantage.

I do question a few of those specs listed though.

the 745 is a 400mhz FSB Dothan. Those were what came in the T42. The T43 typically had 533mhz Dothans.

The T41P did not have a number system, as it was introduced with the Dothans. It would have listed 1.7ghz; and even then, a. the 730 is a 1.6ghz b. the 730 is a 533mhz part, as 7x0 = 533, 7x5 = 400 FSB. If there were to be a number scheme, it'd be a 735. (there's also 7x3 and 7x8 for LV and ULV processors)

Thanks, that indeed clarifies the issue (however would this T41p be backed up by original IBM 3 years warranty just like new T4x usually come, I wouldn't hesitate...)

You have to balance pros and cons:

Pros:

It's a workstation model. It comes loaded with everything as default (bluetooth among other things).
The battery life is greater (at least 10% more).
It's nearly silent (T43 is known for having a loud fan).
RAM is cheap.

Cons:

It's sightly slower.
The T43 is sitghtly better built.

The T43 could have bluetooth as well, but since he didn't mention it, I ignored it. It's upgradable if he does need it.

DDR2 laptop RAM is usually about $20 cheaper than DDR1 (at least for 1gb sticks)...so that could invalidate that argument.

Battery life is upgradeable either way. It's easy to buy 9 cell batteries, but you're more or less stuck with what's internal on the laptop itself.

Workstation graphics is quite possibly a drawback, by the way, depending on whether or not you're needing OpenGL games. I could never get Tribes2, Quake3, or Doom3 to work on my FireGL T2 128 that was in my T41P and T42P. The X300 can run all of those fairly well.

Thank you guys for yuor opinions, each of them is valid by itself.
In fact, I called our local IBM service - they were quite a bit sceptical about their willingness to deal with refubrished items. Yes, right, the seller (shop) clearly mentions this T41p comes with 1 year IBM warranty, but them, IBM guy didn't sound reassuring and somewhat let me understand that refubrished items aren't of their first priority to service, unlike regular products covered by manuafcturer warranty being brand new.
So at last, T41p option has failed and dismissed.

Now I left with the choice of bringing T43 from US or local Z60m purchase (same price)....

You made a mistake. You don't need to say anything about it being refurbished. They don't mark them that way in the database; they are requiered to treat it like any new product. My Precision M70 from Dell is refurbished; I bought it from the outlet and never had any problem with warranty.

Don't know. Since it was officially refubrished by IBM, I suspect they does mark it somehow in their database (at least this is what I inferred from the info available on Lenovo site). Yes, I agree ideally they indeed are required to take care of it as it would be purchased brand new, but as I understood frmo the reps, in our country they prefer not to deal much with refubs of any kind.
I guess I would still have it services here if that would be necessay, but still, go figure..
