M6805 memory upgrade

Thread Starter
Just to double check folks. Will 1GB DDR400 at CAS 3 work good in my M6805? Or will 1GB DDR333 work better as it runs at CAS 2.5? Here is what I am thinking about buying: It's 1GB Corsair DDR 400.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145562

Thanks.

no go! CAS3 & 2.6v on a m6805 - nah, 2.5v is possible

my experiences (all with 2.5v module):
1. 1gb PC3200 CAS3 - on one slot - = stable
2. 768mb PC3200 CAS3 - on two slots = either bomb out at XP start, or shut down when it felt like it
3. 1gb PC3200 CAS2.5 - on one slot - = as in 1
4. 1gb PC3200 CAS2.5 - on two slots - = as in 2
5. 768MB PC3200 CAS2.5 - on two slots - = as in 1
6. 1 CAS 3.0 & 2.6V = beep at power on :-)

eBay probably is a place for bargains but one must watch out for doggy characters, ask a lot of question to be sure what u buy is what u get.
newegg is one of many well established mail-order for ram modules
safest is a good store in your neigbourhood

for good deals - read lots of newspaper and advertissment - no joke.

I take it if I want 2GB I want to get 2x of 1gb PC3200 CAS2.5? Any brand prefered or will they all work with the Emachine?

Same question on the hard drive. Any brand laptop hard drive will work or is there a prefered?

This one looks to be the cheapest one on Newegg:

i personally would stay away from any 1gb PC3200 for the m6805 - unless they can SPECIFICALLY garantee that it is at 2.5v which i doubt very much nowadays. Your safe bet , as mentioned earlier is a PC2700. i run ONE PC3200 module and at a very tight timing and after lots of $/trials. if u want 2gb - do stick with the PC2700, it is safe and fast and NO headache. check out SpinItch thread for compatibility comparison: http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=121534 Hard drive: my personal preference is a must 7200rpm; 60gb and above is good, try to look for any mentioning of noise. It is hard to find a lousy hard drive nowadays, technology is just being improving cheers ...

Neweggs website tech spec say that it is 2.5:

Tech SpecCapacity1GBSpeedDDR 400 (PC 3200)Cas Latency2.5Voltage2.5VECCNoBuffered/RegisteredUnbufferedHeat SpreaderNo

And this latest review says:

M6811 Notebook RAM Upgrade

Pros:
eMachines M6811 has 2 slots, one user accessable. Factory memory via Memtest: 1038 Mb/s, 157 Mhz(DDR315), CAS 2.5-3-3-7. 2 new PQI 1 Gb chips installed. Memtest: 1305 Mb/s, 200 Mhz (DDR400), CAS 3-3-3...
-8. 25% speed improvement. No bios change needed.

Cons: None.... More ยป

Other Thoughts: Sorry I didn't upgrade sooner. Survived 24 hr Prime 95 torture test, no errors. Good to go.

The price of this memory is cheaper then PC2700 1GB rails. That said, I would hate to buy two of these rails and not boot or have lockups. And this reviewer does have the 6811 and not the 6805. Do you think it would be just to risky?

other than the cpu, optical drive, it is not much of difference between the m6811 and m6805, so theorically, it should work.

i honestly can't say about 2 sticks PC3200 in m6805. as said, i m on ONE PC3200 stick, my m6805 freezes when i put it the 2nd PC3200 regardless if it is 256, 512 or 1024 - same latency, same voltage - still testing with different modules and tweak

to be fair, the PC3200 would offer u a better bandwidth, but fanatical asides, unless u can bring the PC3200 down to the level of PC2700 in term of CAS-RAS-..., it would make little difference in system performance under the AMD64 architecture.

my vote = stick with PC2700 if u want 2GB

Is there a big gain in going to 2GB over just upgrading the easy to access memory rail?

Also people seem to like this HITACHI 100GB 7200RPM drive:

I figured as long as I am ordering memory I might as well add a hard drive at the same time.

Thoughts?

just updating one rail to bring the total to more than 1gb is a big jump in system performance. i remember reading somewhere that after a certain threshold, 768mb or 1gb, the gain is minuscule, the rest lies pretty much in cpu architecture and OS

good price for the hard drive.

Thanks qhn. Perhaps that is the way to go then. Should I still stick with the PC2700 to be safe?

Also what have you heard on CPU upgrade to the new AMD Turion 64? I hear it runs cooler in the M68## machines?
yeah - stay with pc2700

turion on m6805? no go, mobo, chipset,bios .... u name it, the m6805 ain't having it :-)

i m pushing 3700+ on mine, and i believe that it max for this mobo (but have heard otherwise)

cheers ...

Thanks again for the info. I will go ahead and order the drive and a PC2700 module.

So you replaced the 3000+ chip with a 3400+ and overclock it to 3700+?

Was it a big project swapping it the processor and is it worth it or should I just stick with the memory and drive upgrade?
3000+ to 3400+
now waiting for $ to go to 3700+
i heard of 2 gents already installing a 4000+ in the m68xx with no issue. i'd stop mine at 3700+ though.

swapping CPU is straight forward. there is enough info in other thread to guide u through

cheers ...
