Cracking open a 9300.

Thread Starter
A connection in my 9300 broke and I would like to see if I can repair it before sending it back (not in warrenty). I have built desktops before so I know my way inside of a computer....but I haven't done much in the way of laptops. Is it relatively safe for someone of my skill level to open a laptop and if so, what to look out for upon opening in 9300 in terms of disconnecting the monitor/keyboard?

Thanks.

They are all quick connects. Just grab them by the plactic or metal piece and just pull them off. It's easy.

Just pop the cover off the top of the laptop. It's right above the keyboard, under the monitor. You'll see a notch at the right, just use something to pop it open. Make sure the monitor is laid all the way back, so that piece will come off.

Then unscrew the two screws holding in the keyboard. Lift keyboard and disconnect it.

Then flip the laptop over, and take ALL the screws around the outside edge out, except the ones directly under the PCMCIA slot. Its two of them, and they are for the harddrive.

Then open the bay for the PCI slot, its the upper one. Disconnect the antenna wires and push them through the opening out the top of the laptop.

Flip the laptop back over and take the four screws holding the monitor in place and place it to the side.

Now take the screws holding the top of the laptop cover on. All are located under where the keyboard was and that quick snap piece.

Lift the plastic cover up, and there is your inside laptop.

Shouldn't be a problem. Just take it slow and carefull....

BTW, here's the service manual:

I was amazed when I first got the 9300 at how easy it was to muck around inside. There isn't a lot to it -- everything's attached to the motherboard or screwed in or both. There are very few cables.

Is there a version of this I can download? PDF format maybe?

You can DL it here, but only as an HTML doc:

Note: Dell suggests using Help and Support Center to view it.

Just remember, literally cracking it open is a bad idea. Just follow the guides
