Black MacBook

I was wondering, is the black finish on the macBook glossy or matte?
The case is matte so it won't have the problems that the black ipod exhibits. I picked one up a couple of hours ago and this thing is very cool. It has an awesome screen and it feels very solid. I have a Macbook Pro and an iBook. The Macbook feels much more solid than the iBook and nearly as solid as the MB Pro. I'm installing XP at the moment so I can take it to work in the morning. Bootcamp seems to be working so far.

Duffy,

How does the glossy screen look? How much reflection?

How's the heat issue? That was the #1 reason why I purchased a D820 from Dell instead of a Macbook Pro. Too many complaints about the heat.

how is the keyboard. it looks very wierd.

I read that if you have two fingers on the mouse pad and click it acts as if you are ctrl-clicking. If so, that is pretty cool.

That would be most cool. & I would imagine w/ a sw/fw update, this could happen on a MBP, also.

I gotta say, if I weren't the occassional gamer, I would go for the MB. But, having the capability to play some CS:S or BF2 on the XP-side is still a clincher for me.

Just picked up a black MacBook. I need to work with it a bit before I can write a review. So far, so good. As weird as the keyboard looks it's very easy to type on. Feels very solid. Will most likely bump up the RAM. My only concern so far is the finish. I know someone posted pics on Flickr showing the 'coating' peeling off around the edges of the LCD display. It also seems like this matte finish might be very susceptible to scratching. We'll see on that. Additionally the palm rests/trackpad area show residue if your hands have oil or sweat on them. Mine has not accumulated any yet, however I did see it on the display model at the store. I may end up returning it for a white one. One nice feature is a user-replaceable hard drive. Not sure if or how this would effect the warranty or AppleCare though. Will post more later.

what about heat issue? how warm is it?

and just of simple curiosity, why doesn't Apple make a silver macbook instead of white?

well, I was debating getting black or getting white with my student discount and upping the size of the HDD, that one there seals it for me. Side note: does anyone know if the screen rubbing on the keys is going to be an issue with this machine? This is my first Mac and I've heard storys of key rubbing on the screens when closed.

I have not heard about the issue of key rubbing the screen. Obviously since they screen is glaossy it will attract the dirt on the keyboard when the lid is closed. You can obviously use the same mterial that cam with your notebook when you close the lid and also have a good LCD cleaner and wipe the dirt from the screen. Though glossy screen has some disadvantages, it is awesome when you use it inside.

If Apple follows form, my guess is you won't see a silver MacBook...silver seems to be reserved for the PowerBook / now MacBook Pro...

How sensitive is this particular glossy screen to LCD cleaning products, I wonder? If you want to err on the side of caution, then I recommend using micro fiber cloths only...

It gets a little warm underneath the left side, but not to the point where it would be uncomfortable on your lap (although individual sensitivities may vary in this area).

While I can't speak for Apple my guess would be that the color differences are to distinguish between the 'pro' and 'standard' models..

If you're concerned, get one of these: ($12)
