Yeah. That is a down side of it. I had a neighbor knock on my front door all cranked off because he couldn't get on my AP and surf the net. As if he has a right to it. After that I started checking the AP for unauthorized users and changing my key every week.

so are the WRT54G and GS good routers despite the fact that you cant install other firmware? i dont think my dad is gonna need a super tweaked router, just something with basic functionality that is reliable.

so in terms of a basic, reliable cheap router, what is the consensus, or is there none? if it comes down to it i might buy a WRT54GL, but ive been reading a few negative reviews on its packetloss, restarting, etc, but i hear if i update it with 3rd party firmware it fixes it. is this generally true?

I don't know about reliability of the new WRT54G 's. I do know that now the 54G has half the RAM and flash memory; and the 54GS, one fourth (1/4) of the RAM and half the flash, from previous versions up to 3. The v4, which was still linux, came with half memory and flash. Then, when they released v5 (VxWorks), the RAM was capped once again, but the flash amount was still the same. After a lot of pressure from the community, Linksys fired a new version of the 54G, with the original amount of flash and RAM, powered, too, by Linux, like the first versions. I wonder if somehow the worse hardware will have an impact on the performance for simple networks like ours. If it's G or GS, I would look for some other brand. /* edited If you plan to install OpenWrt, take a look at the Table of Hardware before buying. */

its not supported, damnit. oh well, is the fact that it has less ram and flash gonna mean that if i do network intensive tasks, like torrents, its gonna overflow the memory and im gonna need to restart it?

You're kidding right?

The balls on that guy! I'd have given him a bill for 1/2 my internet charge.

No he was serious. I didn't do much other than give him a nasty look and shut the door a little faster than normal.

Edit: I meant "normal".

Yeah, that's pretty much what I'd have done too although I'd have told him off about it first.

I still can't believe that he felt he had some kind of right to use your internet. Okay, I admit that I've used someone's unsecured wireless here and there but not on a regular, long-term basis and I certainly would not go complain to the owner if it didn't work. Wow, I'm still stunned...

Yeah he's a moron. Thus is the price we pay for badass range. He did come around yesterday and ask me what service I subscribed to and what router I had. I figured if he was truly interested in learning why not. So he ended up buying a router and now I can clearly see his signal from my home as I type this. Sadly he's not got any security up and running. Some people...

This si what I finally decided to buy from Newegg: LINKSYS WKUSB54GS IEEE 802.11b/g Wireless-G USB Kit with SpeedBooster - Retail = $89.99 + 7.90 S/H

I think its the WRT54GS with a USB Adapter included.
Looked like the best combo for the price when I was getting a router and should be at my apartment tomorrow

I did hear some complaining about the the v5 of the WRT54G/GS and I am hoping I get the v4 model.
Everyone on the reviews is saying that it is the v4. It has half of ram and flash of previous GS 's, but you can still configure with other firmwares!! Anyway, same amount of the GL, I guess you will be fine!!

Well, I jsut got my Wireless router combo today in the mail.
The router itself is a WRT54GS v4.
<whew just dodged the bullet>

I am pretty sure it is the v5 of teh RT54G/GS that many people was posting complaints about.
And no, it isnt just the Firmware that I heard teh other people having issues with the other v5.
Its the hardware in it itself that is different for the v5 of these routers.
And yes it is the Flash, RAM and usign a different OS.

Is there any advantages of getting the WRT54GS over the WRT54G if I don't plan on buying new wireless cards? I know I won't get the faster speed, but I was wondering it had any other advantages or was just more efficient in general?
I believe the GS is only the G with speedbooster. Of course, it has more RAM, but probably it's just to support the extra load.

If you won't use the extra speed, i don't see any reason...

so what about the D-link one made for gaming, how's that in a normal ABG card? I also like the gigabit hub in it too...
