Ok, out of these two options, which one is better? 1.5 Processor, XGA screen; or 1.4 Processor, SXGA+ screen?

Hmm looks like the "Free" DVD burner machines are now in the outlet...I wonder why they would be higher than a custom built without the DVD burner. Perhaps they were not "free" after all! Actually the "free" DVD is a misnomer advertising play...I configed an SB machine whitout that deal and it WAS less expensive then the ones in the home area with the "free" DVD burner.

In fact if you configure a "New" machine and DON't want the DVD You have to buy the SB machine in oreder to get a "credit" or discount" for the DVD burner.

Seems the outlet is playing that as well in reverse!

Now I'm starting to think... is 1.3 a lot worse than 1.4 or 1.5? I'm starting to think I could save a few bucks by getting the 1.3 processor instead of the 1.4 or 1.5.

1.3ghz is totally doable. think of it as a difference between 2.8ghz pentium4 and 3.2 can you REALLy tell?

Not with the right GPU

Hmm, well, I'm glad I waited because Dell has some great deals going now. I've managed to configure a notebook without using one of their recommended solutions, and it comes to $1318, which is with a 1.4 processor, WXGA screen, 512 RAM, 64 bit video, and a DVD burner. When I used one of their recommended solutions, it was $1300 for a 1.5 processor, WXGA screen, 512 RAM, 64 bit video, and CD burner. So I was thinking that it's quite an advantage to upgrade to a DVD burner and .1 slower processor. What do yall think of this?

EDIT: In addition to yall's opinion on the above statements, I think I am going to order this tonight. Yes, TONIGHT. Anyway, let me give yall the specs on everything I'm ordering, and then you can tell me if it's a good deal or not.

INSPIRON 8600 - $1320, after MIR

-Intel Processor M, 15.4 WXGA
-Windows XP Home Edition
-512 RAM, 2 DIMMs
-64 MB NVIDIA GeForce
-4x CD/DVD burner (DVD+R/+RW)
-40GB Ultra ATA Hard Drive
-72 WHr Primary Battery
-Dell TrueMobileâ„¢ 1300 WLAN (802.11b/g, 54Mbps) miniPCI Card
NO MODULAR FLOPPY DISK (I decided I didn't really need one, and if it turns out that I do, then I can buy one later... besides I have one on this computer.)

DELL PERSONAL ALL-IN-ONE A940 -$130

-Prints, scans, copies, faxes

DI-624 AirPlus Xtreme G High-Speed 108Mbps Wireless Router - $70

-$20 MIR

Action Messenger Case - $30

The total, therefore, comes to $1550.

Here's the deals that I got:

-Free shipping on EVERYTHING!
-Free upgrade to a DVD burner
-10% all software and peripherals
-$250 MIR
-$50 off any home system purchase

All in all, I think it's a good deal. What are yall's opinions on it?

Ok, I am happy to say that I have ordered my Inspiron 8600! I upgraded the screent o a WSXGA+ and downsized to a 1.4 processor instead of 1.5, but it's all good. They say it should be shipped the 25th... do you think I have a chance of getting it earlier than that?
Usually its alwasy early ive NEVER heard of on order exceeding expected ship times unless there was something specifically wrong with the machine

Sounds like a good deal to me. If I'm not mistaken dell is the only one who sells ink for their printers so you can't just go and buy it at office depot.

Hey Spiffy, I ordered my 8600 on 2-7-04 and it is going to be delivered by UPS on Monday 2-16 (the estimated ship date). That was including the three days it sat in the "Boxing" step of the "In Production" phase. Mine was completed in one day. From kit to box on 2-9. Dell seems to be slamming these out.

Mine was:

1.7 WUXGA
XP Pro
40gb hd
512mb ram
64mb nvidia vid card
64mb usb memory key
4x dvd+rw
3 year warranty
addtional modular battery
Red Lava cover among other components

Now if only UPS would deliver it today

Hi y'all...could those who finally got their 8600's tell me how happy you are with it? I've not made my order with Dell just yet, but either the 8600 or 600m is what I'm looking for. It's basically a desktop replacement, but with lots of mobile performance (good battery life and graphics). Used mostly for word proccesing, .NET programming, Crystal reporting, Cold Fusion...and surfing wireless with a D-Link 714P+.

I'm particularly interested in hearing how good the display is. I've seen Sony Vaio displays and they are superb. If I got a Dell with WXGA+ would quality suffice for watching DVD movies?

Did you mean Graphics for Professional use or for Gaming? I would suggest the M60 for professional use.

The occasional game. I'd use the laptop mostly for DVD movies, clips, music.
Should I stick with an i8600, 15.4"?
I think so, for dvd, it'd be awesome if dell had a 17"
the M60 now has the Quadro FX 1000 and you can configure one MUCH cheaper than they used to be id cosider this over the 8600
