Shutting Lid

Ok, here's my problem. I sent in my 5680 for a repair to its LCD frame, which was cracked. Woo hoo, I got it back, thought everything was fine and dandy.

There exists one problem. When I shut the lid, the screen does not turn off as it did before. No settings within Windows or Linux were changed, and I doubled checked to deny the crack factor. I emailed Sager a while ago about it, and they contacted me, but I didn't understand the instructions; the syntax was pretty garbled (and I was going to be an English major if I wasn't so into computers).

What can I do restore my lid-closing-screen-blacking-so-the-LCD-doesn't-die-prematurely functionality?

If you go into the display dialog or the power dialog, there's an advanced button where you can set what happens when you close the lid. At least its there on my 8886.

Or, it could be your lid switch is kaput. You can test that once you set the action.

You can also set a time after which the screen turns off whether on power or battery. I feel that's even more effective in saving that backlight. Then again, its just a backlight, they are not that expensive.

I checked the settings first, they are normal. I do already have it set to turn off the screen after 10 minutes instead of putting up a screensaver (fans sometimes keep me awake).

Is there a way I can fix the lid switch without having to RMA it? I can't really afford a second RMA, both pecuniarily and temporaly.

Same thing happened to me - sent my machine back due to a dead pixel. Got the laptop back with a new screen, but the close lid switch does not work.

No use asking for help here - everyone's answer is the obvious (settings in control panel, blah blah blah). I went back and forth with Sager tech, and they had me try to run a magnet along the bottom below the screen. They were trying to tell me there is some magnetic switch inside the screen lid that activates the close lid option (which doesn't make sense - a 'magnetic' switch). Anyway, their final answer was to send it back again. No friggin way! I have resorted to the Fn+F4 for Standby mode, until I am bored enough to open the laptop up myself. It can't be too hard to fix.

Hope this helps, and if you find a fix, PLEASE let me know.

Ack! I'd be loathe to get one of those dreaded M-thingies anywhere near my Sager!! Please let us know how it goes.

Just in case you haven’t already tried,
In Windows XP: right-click on the desktop and select ‘properties’ > click on the Screen Saver Tab > under ‘Monitor Power’ click on the ‘Power’ button to access the Power Options Properties Window > click on the ‘Advanced’ tab > under Power buttons click on the drop down menu for ‘When I close the lid of my portable computer’ and select ‘Stand by’ > click ‘Apply and then ‘OK’ at the bottom of the Window > click ‘OK’ at the bottom of the Display Properties Window > Restart (as required).

Hope this helps, if not then I would suggest looking in to getting an RMA.

I repeat, it is NOT a software problem. I have double, triple, quadruple, and quintuple checked that, and I know that it is hardware because of this. Also, when put on standby then the lid is opened, it does not resume as it should. This IS a hardware problem, anyone have any HARDWARE advice on how to repair this?

yes I got the exactly the same problem when my 5680 cover cracked and rma for repaired, then backlight light doesnt shut off when closed when they returned me...the guy told me same thing with magnet stuff, which doesnt make any sense, but no way im gona rma back again, so i look around the forum and i dl this program monoff or something like that, either you just click that or set a hot key to shut off the light and then close the lid ....but still I would really like to have the light shuts off once lid closes....bummer...it seems the sager screwed up our lid..??!

Another thought, have you checked the Power Management schemes within windows? There are options for different behaviors when the lid is closed. Might be worth your while to look into that. The 'help' system within windows will guide you through it.

Well, usually there is a switch that is depressed when you close the lid. My 5660 has it, I have no clue what the difference is between it and the 5680.

I don't see why they would resort to some sort of 'magnetic' setup when a button does just fine.

Is it on the bottom right of the lcd casing? There's a little protruding triangle.

EDIT
JasonE4 beat me to it.
/EDIT
Look on the bottom right of the display. just left of the right hing. between the ruber screw cover and the hing there should be a raised portion on the lid. directly below that on the main body of the laptop there should be a cutout. look there and see if there is a little pin sticking up. if not they broke the lid switch. if it's there they forgot to reconnect the wires (assuming it's not soldered directly to the board).
I wasn't sure if there should be a pin there. Mine doesn't have one, but I don't remember it ever having one (when it worked). Hmmm...
I'm working from a 5670 so it may be different. Try the magnet thing but in reverse take a small screw driver non magnetized of course. see if it sticks to the little area.
yeah i dont remember there's one either perhaps a picture? mine has nothing right there either...so i guess either they forgot or they broke the wire

another thought...
try right clicking on a blank area of your desktop screen | choose properties | and go thru the various tabs. I think you can find settings in there to correct your problwn.

I was looking at the service manual for the 5670, and, since it is similar to the 5680, I'm pretty sure that there should be a pin there. If you laptop doesn't have a pin, try sticking something into the hole and pressing down very carefully. If the screen turns off, I think you've found the culprit. I do believe the switch is attached to the motherboard, but it looks like it could be detachable, maybe I'll open up my laptop and take a look.

Jmsnipe, if you do open it up, please take a pic and post it for us. It would be greatly appreciated. If someone else suggests that I check my Power Options Settings, I just might lose my mind.
